There are pilgrimages and then there is the Char Dham Yatra. No journey in the Hindu tradition carries the combined weight of spiritual significance, geographic grandeur, and personal transformation that this sacred circuit of four Himalayan shrines delivers to everyone who undertakes it. The Char Dham Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath four temples dedicated to the river goddesses and the supreme deities of the Hindu cosmos, set in the high Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand at altitudes ranging from 3,100 to 3,900 metres represent the holiest pilgrimage available to a devout Hindu on Indian soil. Completing the Char Dham Yatra is believed to wash away the accumulated karma of a lifetime, grant liberation from the cycle of rebirth, and fulfil one of the deepest spiritual obligations in the Hindu tradition.
But the Char Dham Yatra is not only a religious journey. It is one of the great adventure experiences of India a journey into some of the most spectacularly beautiful mountain terrain on earth, along roads that climb through forested gorges, across glacial rivers, past waterfalls and meadows and ancient settlements, to temples perched at the edge of the Himalayan snowline where the air is thin, the light is extraordinary, and the distance from ordinary life is measured not just in kilometres but in something more fundamental. The Ganges and Yamuna rising from their source glaciers, Kedarnath's stone temple standing before the awesome backdrop of the Kedarnath massif, Badrinath's coloured facade reflected in the Alaknanda River with the Neelkanth peak rising 6,596 metres above these are sights of such concentrated natural and spiritual power that they change people, quietly and permanently.
At Vayable Trip, we have been organising Char Dham Yatra packages for pilgrims and travellers of all ages, fitness levels, and travel preferences for years. We understand the logistical complexity of this journey the permit requirements, the accommodation constraints at high altitudes, the weather windows, the helicopter options, the medical considerations and we translate that understanding into packages that make the Char Dham Yatra as safe, comfortable, and spiritually enriching as possible. Whatever your age, whatever your physical condition, whatever your timeline, we have a Char Dham package designed for your journey.

Why Book Your Char Dham Yatra with Vayable Trip?
The Char Dham Yatra is not like any other Indian travel experience. The logistics are complex, the altitude is significant, the weather can change rapidly, and the gap between a well-organised Yatra and a poorly organised one is the difference between a spiritually transformative journey and a frustrating and potentially unsafe ordeal. Here is why thousands of pilgrims trust Vayable Trip with their Char Dham Yatra:
Advance Registrations Handled: The Char Dham Yatra requires Yatra registration for all pilgrims (mandatory, managed by the Uttarakhand government). Helicopter bookings for Kedarnath open months in advance and fill within hours. VIP and priority darshan slots at Kedarnath and Badrinath have limited availability. We handle all of this before your departure, so nothing is left to chance.
Medical Safety Protocols: High altitude presents genuine health risks, particularly for senior citizens and those with pre-existing conditions. Our Yatra coordinators carry oxygen cylinders, basic medical kits, and are trained in altitude sickness recognition. We build acclimatisation time into all itineraries and work only with routes and pacing that minimise AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) risk.
Experienced Local Guides: Our Yatra guides are not simply drivers with local knowledge. They are trained pilgrimage coordinators who understand the ritual protocols at each shrine, the history and mythology of each dham, the correct sequence and timing of darshan and puja, and the logistical landscape of the Uttarakhand Himalaya in every season.
Weather Intelligence: The Char Dham temples are open from May to November (typically opening in late April/early May and closing around Diwali). Weather conditions particularly around Kedarnath can be severe and can change rapidly. Our team monitors conditions in real time and has contingency plans built into every itinerary.
Accommodation Secured in Advance: Accommodation at Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri is limited and fills rapidly during the pilgrimage season. We book all accommodation at the time of package confirmation you travel with every night already secured.
24/7 On-Ground Support: Our Char Dham ground team is reachable around the clock throughout your Yatra. Any situation weather disruption, health concern, transport delay is managed by a team with the local knowledge and relationships to resolve it quickly.
The Four Dhams – What Awaits You
Yamunotri – The Source of the Yamuna
The westernmost of the four dhams and the first in the traditional pilgrimage sequence, Yamunotri is situated at 3,293 metres in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The Yamunotri Temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the sacred river that flows through Delhi, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Agra before joining the Ganges at Prayagraj sits at the foot of the Kalind Parbat mountain, near the source glacier of the Yamuna River (the Champasar Glacier, visible at 4,421 metres above the temple). The shrine is accessed by a trek of 6 km from Janki Chatti a beautiful, increasingly dramatic walk through the Yamuna gorge past forested slopes and rocky outcrops. The Surya Kund thermal spring near the temple in which pilgrims cook rice and potatoes as prasad using the naturally boiling water is one of the most practically extraordinary sights in the Char Dham circuit. The Divya Shila pillar, worshipped before entering the temple, and the darshan of the black stone idol of Yamuna Devi in the simple inner sanctum are the central devotional acts of the Yamunotri Yatra.
Key Ritual: Cooking rice in the Surya Kund thermal spring for prasad; bathing feet in the Yamuna at Janki Chatti. Trek: 6 km from Janki Chatti (pony and doli/palanquin services available). Best Accommodation Base: Barkot (30 km from Janki Chatti) the largest town with the best accommodation options.
Gangotri – The Source of the Ganga
The second dham in the traditional sequence, Gangotri sits at 3,415 metres in the Uttarkashi district, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River the main headstream of the Ganges. The Gangotri Temple, a beautiful 18th-century stone shrine built by the Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa, stands on the banks of the Bhagirathi and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple is most approached by road from Uttarkashi (100 km), and the drive through pine and birch forest, past the dramatic Bhairon Ghati gorge and the beautiful Harsil Valley is one of the finest mountain road journeys in Uttarakhand.
The actual source of the Ganges the Gaumukh Glacier is 18 km further from Gangotri on a trek that passes through increasingly dramatic high-altitude landscape to the glacier snout at 3,892 metres, where the Ganges emerges from beneath the ice in a rush of cold, milky water. The Gaumukh trek (a separate permit is required) is not part of the standard Char Dham circuit but is available as a day extension for those with sufficient fitness and time. Our Premium packages include this extension as an option.
Key Ritual: Bathing in the Bhagirathi at Gangotri; taking sacred Ganga water for offering at the other dhams and for home use. Drive: 100 km from Uttarkashi (3–4 hours through exceptional mountain scenery). Best Accommodation Base: Uttarkashi (2 nights) and Gangotri (1 night, basic accommodation available).
Kedarnath – Lord Shiva's Himalayan Throne
The most dramatic and most demanding of the four dhams, Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres below the enormous Kedarnath massif — a wall of grey rock and permanent snow that provides the most spectacular temple backdrop in the Char Dham circuit. The Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as a Jyotirlinga one of the twelve self-manifested forms of Shiva and is one of the most revered Shiva shrines in India. The ancient stone temple, believed to have been built by the Pandavas and consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE, survived the catastrophic 2013 floods (which destroyed most of the surrounding settlement) largely intact an event widely interpreted as a miracle of divine protection.
The approach to Kedarnath involves a trek of 16–19 km from Gaurikund (the road head) through a landscape that becomes progressively more dramatic from forest to open meadow to the final stretch of the Mandakini valley with the Kedarnath peaks towering above. The sight of the Kedarnath temple appearing in the upper valley, small against the enormous mountain backdrop, is one of the most powerful visual moments available anywhere in the Indian Himalaya. Helicopter services are available from multiple helipads (Phata, Sersi, Guptkashi, Sitapur) and reduce the journey to 7–10 minutes of aerial flight our packages offer both options.
Key Ritual: Abhishek (sacred bathing of the Jyotirlinga) and darshan of the black stone lingam within the sanctum; Samadhi Puja at the rear of the temple. Trek: 16–19 km from Gaurikund (ponies and dolis available); 7–10 minutes by helicopter. Best Accommodation Base: Guptkashi (2 nights) the most comfortable base with good hotels, 30 km from Gaurikund.
Badrinath – The Abode of Lord Vishnu
The last of the four dhams and the one that most pilgrims consider the culminating experience of the Yatra, Badrinath sits at 3,133 metres in the Chamoli district on the banks of the Alaknanda River, below the magnificent Neelkanth peak (6,596 metres). The Badrinath Temple — its facade painted in brilliant shades of green, gold, and red, making it perhaps the most visually striking of the four dham temples is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Badrinarayan, and is one of the four Vishnu temples that form the Badri Panchaayatan (the five Badri shrines of the Himalaya). The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE at the site of an ancient natural Vishnu shrine.
The approach to Badrinath by road through the Alaknanda gorge via Joshimath is spectacular, passing the Vishnuprayag (one of the five sacred river confluences of the Garhwal Himalaya) and the remarkable Narsimha Temple at Joshimath (which houses a deity whose arm is slowly thinning, believed to herald the end of the current cosmic age when it falls). At Badrinath itself, the Tapt Kund thermal spring in which pilgrims bathe before entering the temple the Narad Kund (where the Badrinath idol was recovered by Shankaracharya), and the Brahma Kapal a flat rock platform on the Alaknanda where pitru tarpan (ancestor rituals) are performed, considered the most auspicious place on earth for such rituals are the key devotional experiences.
Mana Village, just 3 km from Badrinath and the last inhabited village before the Tibet border, adds a remarkable cultural dimension a traditional settlement of the Bhotia community where Vyas Guha (the cave where the sage Vyas composed the Mahabharata) and the Saraswati River (one of the three sacred rivers that flow here before disappearing underground) can be visited.
Key Ritual: Tapt Kund bath before temple darshan; Brahma Kapal pitru tarpan for deceased ancestors; darshan of the black stone idol of Badrinarayan. Drive: 300 km from Rishikesh (8–9 hours via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karanprayag, Chamoli); 44 km from Joshimath. Best Accommodation Base: Joshimath (2 nights) and/or Badrinath (1 night, GMVN accommodation available).
Important Char Dham Yatra Information
Yatra Registration
Since 2022, the Uttarakhand government has made Char Dham Yatra registration mandatory for all pilgrims. Registration is done online through the official Devasthanam Board portal and requires a valid ID (Aadhaar, PAN, or Passport). Pilgrim numbers at each dham are regulated by daily caps. Our team handles all registration as part of every package booking — this is a critical logistical requirement that we manage so you don't have to.
Opening and Closing Dates
The four dham temples open annually on specific auspicious dates (typically April/May — the exact dates are determined by the Uttarkashi Jyotish Panchang each year and announced in advance) and close for winter in October/November. The opening ceremony at Kedarnath — on Akshaya Tritiya — is particularly celebrated, as is the closing ceremony when the deity is moved to Ukhimath for the winter.
Typical Opening Dates:
- Yamunotri and Gangotri: Akshaya Tritiya (April/May)
- Kedarnath: One or two days after Akshaya Tritiya
- Badrinath: A week or two after Akshaya Tritiya
Typical Closing Dates:
- Yamunotri and Gangotri: Diwali (October/November)
- Kedarnath: Two days after Diwali (Bhai Dooj)
- Badrinath: Around 15–20 days after Diwali
Medical Requirements
The Char Dham Yatra involves altitudes between 3,100 and 3,900 metres significant enough to cause Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) in some travellers. Pilgrims with heart conditions, severe respiratory issues, uncontrolled hypertension, or recent surgery are advised to consult their physician before undertaking the Yatra. Our packages include medical support, oxygen cylinder availability, and itineraries with appropriate acclimatisation built in.
Best Time for the Char Dham Yatra
May to June (Pre-Monsoon): The most popular period. The temples have just opened, the enthusiasm of the new season is in the air, and the weather is generally clear and manageable. May (especially after the opening week crowds) is excellent; June becomes busier as school vacations begin. The roads are at their best post-winter.
September to November (Post-Monsoon): Our recommended season for most pilgrims. After the monsoon rains, the Uttarakhand landscape is spectacularly green, the waterfalls are dramatic, the air is crystalline, and the Himalayan views from Kedarnath and Badrinath are at their clearest. Crowds thin significantly from September onward. The closing ceremonies in October/November add a unique spiritual dimension.
July to August (Monsoon): The Char Dham Yatra continues through the monsoon, but the Uttarakhand Himalaya receives heavy rainfall and landslides occasionally affect road access (particularly near Kedarnath and Badrinath). Travel during the monsoon requires flexibility, good travel insurance, and our real-time road condition monitoring service. Not recommended for those with fixed travel dates.

Local Tips:
- The Char Dham Yatra is conducted in the traditional east-to-west sequence: Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath. This sequence is considered ritually correct and logistically optimal.
- Book Kedarnath helicopter tickets as early as possible they open in February/March for the coming season and the good time slots are gone within days.
- The Brahma Kapal pitru tarpan (ancestor ritual) at Badrinath is considered the most auspicious of all pitru rituals in the Hindu tradition more powerful even than the Gaya shraddh. Bring the names and gotras (lineage) of all departed family members for whom you wish to perform the ritual.
- Night temperatures at Kedarnath can be -5°C even in June pack accordingly.
- The Kedarnath area above the temple (toward Vasuki Tal) is one of the finest alpine landscapes in the Garhwal Himalaya even non-trekkers should walk at least 30 minutes above the temple on a clear day.
