Meenakshi Amman Temple
There is no building in South India more magnificent than the Meenakshi Amman Temple, and few buildings anywhere in India that equal it. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi a form of Parvati and her consort Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva), and it covers an area of approximately 65,000 sq metres in the heart of Madurai's old city. The complex has twelve gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest of which rises to 51.9 metres each covered top to bottom in stucco sculptures of gods, demons, celestial beings, and mythological scenes, painted in vivid polychrome in a Dravidian tradition that dates back over a thousand years. Over 33,000 sculptures adorn the temple complex in total.
Within the temple, the Hall of a Thousand Pillars (Ayirakkal Mandapam) actually 985 pillars, each individually carved is one of the great architectural achievements of the Nayak period. The Golden Lotus Tank (Potramarai Kulam), where pilgrims bathe before entering the inner sanctum, reflects the gopurams in its still water in a composition of extraordinary beauty. Built in 1636 by King Thirumalai Nayak, the Thirumalai Nayak Palace was once the grandest palace in South India a sprawling complex of courtyards, pillared halls, and audience chambers that blended Dravidian and Italian baroque architectural elements in a synthesis unique to the Nayak period. Today, only a fraction of the original palace survives, but the surviving Swarga Vilasam (Celestial Pavilion) is stunning a vast, colonnaded hall with extraordinarily tall pillars and an open courtyard that gives a clear sense of the original palace's monumental ambition. Gandhi Memorial Museum
Housed in the historic Tamukkam Palace, the Gandhi Memorial Museum is one of the finest museums dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in India maintaining his personal belongings, letters, photographs, and most significantly the dhoti he was wearing when he was assassinated. The museum documents the independence movement through well-curated exhibits and has a particularly strong section on the Quit India movement and Gandhi's relationship with Tamil Nadu. Alagar Kovil (Alagar Temple)
Twenty-one kilometres from Madurai, at the base of the Alagar Hills, the Alagar Kovil is one of the 108 Divya Desams the most sacred Vishnu temples in the Vaishnavite tradition. The temple complex is large and beautiful, set against a hillside of large boulders and tropical forest, and the annual Alagar festival (during the Chithirai festival period in April/May) when the deity is brought to Madurai to "witness" the divine marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar is one of the most extraordinary religious processions in Tamil Nadu. The drive to Alagar Kovil through the rocky Alagar Hills is beautiful.
Mariamman Teppakulam Tank
One of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, the Mariamman Teppakulam was built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1645 and is fed by an underground channel from the Vaigai River. The tank is most extraordinary during the Teppakulam Float Festival (Thai Poosam, January/February) when the central island's Vinayaka shrine is floated on a decorated raft to the accompaniment of devotional music and thousands of pilgrims lining the tank's banks. Even outside the festival, the tank is a beautiful and peaceful destination the island shrine reflected in the still water, surrounded by the sounds of the city.
