Kodaikanal Tour Packages

Kodaikanal is different from every other hill station in India. While Ooty has its tea-carpeted Nilgiri panoramas, Darjeeling its Himalayan grandeur, and Shimla its colonial heritage, Kodaikanal has something uniquely its own: a quality of quiet, intimate, forest-wrapped beauty that feels almost private, as though the Palani Hills guarded their highland secret more carefully than the other ranges. At 2,133 metres in the southern Western Ghats, surrounded on three sides by steep forested escarpments that plunge down to the Tamil Nadu plains, Kodaikanal has the atmosphere of a place that has been discovered by those in the know and gently kept from the rest of the world.

The jewel of Kodaikanal is its lake a beautiful star-shaped artificial lake in the heart of the town, created in 1863, ringed by shola forests and the distinctive sloping wooden cottages of the hill station's colonial era. Cycling around the lakeside road on a misty morning, with the pine and eucalyptus forest pressing in from every side and the grey water perfectly still below, is as close as South India comes to the experience of a classic European hill resort. Coaker's Walk a 1 km clifftop promenade with vertigo-inducing views over the plains 1,500 metres below on clear days is one of the finest viewpoints in South India. And the Kodaikanal forest, which includes some of the finest shola ecosystems in the Palani Hills, is rich with Nilgiri langurs, gaur, leopards, and over 300 species of birds.

Kodaikanal has been a favourite destination for Tamil Nadu and Kerala residents for over a century, and its appeal is permanent and unconditional it is simply a beautiful, peaceful, well-natured hill station that makes people feel better for having visited. At Vayable Trip, our Kodaikanal tour packages give you the complete Princess of Hill Stations experience from the iconic lake and viewpoints to the hidden forest walks, the chocolate shops, and the quiet back roads that reveal the town's most charming face.

Top Attractions in Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal Lake

The heart of the hill station and its most beloved attraction, the star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge by damming a stream in the Palani Hills. The lake covers approximately 24 hectares and is surrounded by the shola forest and the colonial-era cottages and hotels that give Kodaikanal its distinctive character. The 5 km lakeside road is perfect for cycling available for hire at multiple points around the lake and the experience of pedalling around the misty shore in the early morning, with the pine trees reflected in the still water and the town waking quietly on the surrounding hillsides, is the quintessential Kodaikanal experience. Boating (in pedal boats and row boats), horse riding on the lakeside path, and simply walking around the circumference are equally enjoyable ways to experience this beautiful lake.

Coaker's Walk

A 1 km clifftop promenade along the southern plateau edge, laid out in 1872, Coaker's Walk offers one of the most dramatic viewpoints in South India. On clear mornings (best October to February), the view plunges 1,500 metres to the Vaigai plains and stretches to the Tamil Nadu horizon. A small telescope allows close-up landmark viewing. On misty days, the swirling clouds below the cliff edge create their own extraordinary visual effect two very different but equally compelling experiences.

Pillar Rocks

Three granite pillars rising approximately 400 metres from the valley floor, visible from a viewpoint 7 km from the town, Pillar Rocks form one of Kodaikanal's finest natural panoramas the pillars set against a forested valley with the blue Palani Hills in the distance. The garden at the viewpoint is a pleasant picnic spot, and the drive through eucalyptus and shola forest is beautiful.

Green Valley View (Suicide Point)

The former "Suicide Point" (now tastefully renamed Green Valley View) is one of the most dramatically vertiginous viewpoints in Kodaikanal a sheer drop of several hundred metres over a densely forested valley, with the Palani Hills range spreading in every direction. The view is particularly magnificent in the late afternoon when the western light illuminates the forested escarpments in gold and green. The surrounding area has a pleasant walking track through the forest.

Bear Shola Falls

A beautiful waterfall about 2 km from Kodaikanal Lake, Bear Shola Falls is named for the bears that were once sighted drinking at its pool. The falls fed by a mountain stream through a dense shola forest are most powerful during and immediately after the monsoon (October–November) and in the post-monsoon season. The walk through the shola forest to the falls is pleasant, with good birding opportunities along the stream.

Berijam Lake

Approximately 21 km from Kodaikanal town, accessible only with a Forest Department permit (arranged by our team), the Berijam Lake is a pristine, largely undisturbed reservoir in the heart of the Palani Hills forest reserve. The drive from Kodaikanal to Berijam passes through the finest shola and tropical moist forest in the Palani Hills and this is where wildlife encounters are most likely: Indian gaur (bison), sambar deer, Nilgiri langur, giant squirrel, and on dawn visits occasionally the Palani Hills leopard. The lake itself, set in an open forest clearing, is beautiful and entirely peaceful no tourist facilities, no noise, just forest and water and sky. Berijam is the highlight of our nature-focused packages and the experience that most distinguishes a Vayable Trip Kodaikanal visit from a standard itinerary.

Guna Cave (Devil's Kitchen)

Made famous by the Tamil film Guna, Guna Cave is a series of three large granite rock overhang chambers in the Pillar Rocks area, accessible by a forest path from the viewpoint. The caves are dramatically atmospheric rock faces covered in ferns and mosses, forest pressing in around the entrances and are popular with younger visitors for the film association and the shola forest walk to reach them.

Kodaikanal Solar Observatory

One of the finest solar observatories in Asia, established in 1899, the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory has maintained one of the world's longest continuous solar observation records. Open for guided tours on specific days, visitors can view the sun through specialist solar-filter telescopes and access a 120-year photographic archive. A genuinely world-class scientific institution in a hill station setting.

Bryant Park

Established in 1908 and adjacent to Kodaikanal Lake, Bryant Park is a beautifully maintained botanical garden with a rose garden, rare orchid greenhouse, and seasonal flower displays. It is most spectacular during the Annual Horticultural Show (May/June). Pleasant for a morning stroll with excellent picnic lawns and a well-gardened, serene atmosphere.

Chocolate & Homemade Products

Kodaikanal's artisan chocolate tradition growing since the 1960s now produces some of the finest handmade chocolates in South India. The main market shops offer extraordinary variety: dark, milk, fruit and nut, spiced, and South Indian flavour combinations in small-batch production. Our packages include a chocolatier workshop visit. Eucalyptus oil, homemade jams, locally made plum and pear wine, and fresh Kodaikanal honey are equally worth bringing home.

Best Time to Visit Kodaikanal

Summer (April to June): The most popular season moderate temperatures (12°C to 22°C), all attractions accessible, and the hill station at its busiest and most festive. The Horticultural Show in May is a highlight. Book accommodation and private vehicles well in advance.

Post-Monsoon (October to December): One of the finest times to visit clear skies after the monsoon, the shola forests at their most lushly green, waterfalls in full flow, and significantly fewer crowds than the summer season. Berijam Lake wildlife sightings are excellent. The winter light is extraordinary for photography.

Winter (January to March): Cool and clear temperatures can drop to 8°C at night. The days are beautiful, with excellent visibility from Coaker's Walk and the viewpoints on clear mornings. Lighter crowds and excellent hotel rates.

Monsoon (July to September): Kodaikanal receives heavy rainfall from the southwest monsoon. The landscape is spectacularly green, the forests are misty and atmospheric, and the waterfalls are at their most powerful. Road conditions can occasionally be affected. A moody, beautiful time for those who embrace the rain.
