West Sikkim is perhaps the most spiritually resonant and scenically dramatic district of this extraordinary Himalayan state. It is a land of ancient monasteries perched on impossibly scenic ridges, terraced cardamom and orange groves cascading down steep hillsides, dense subtropical and temperate forests alive with orchids and birds, and everywhere on clear mornings especially the overwhelming, majestic presence of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, rising in a wall of ice and rock that dominates the western horizon from almost every high point in the district. Our West Sikkim Tour Packages are designed to showcase the region's most iconic attractions, from the panoramic viewpoints of Pelling to the sacred waters of Khecheopalri Lake and the historic ruins of Rabdentse.
West Sikkim is centred on Pelling a small but increasingly well-developed mountain town that has emerged as one of Sikkim's premier tourism destinations, primarily for its access to the ancient Pemayangtse Monastery and its extraordinary Kangchenjunga views. But the district stretches far beyond Pelling, encompassing the sacred Khecheopalri Lake, the ancient Yuksom town (the historical first capital of Sikkim and the base for the Kangchenjunga Base Camp trek), the dramatic Kanchenjunga Waterfall, the beautiful Dentam Valley, and a network of trekking routes and forest paths that take you deep into landscapes of extraordinary, untouched natural beauty.
At Vayable Trip, our West Sikkim tour packages give you full access to this richly layered district its spirituality, its natural grandeur, its cultural heritage, and its adventure possibilities.
Why West Sikkim is a Destination Apart
West Sikkim has a character that is distinctly its own quieter than Gangtok, more wild than the tourist circuits of East Sikkim, and possessing a depth of historical and spiritual significance that rewards the curious traveller at every turn. This is where Sikkim's story begins. Yuksom reachable from Pelling was the site of the first coronation of a Chogyal (King) of Sikkim in 1642 and is considered the holiest town in the state. The forest around Yuksom still feels ancient and protected, as if aware of its historical importance.
West Sikkim is also extraordinarily rich in biodiversity. The Khangchendzonga National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers a large portion of the district harbours snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan black bears, blue sheep, Himalayan wolves, and an astonishing 550+ species of birds. The forests of West Sikkim are among the most biodiverse in the Himalayan region, and the district's commitment to conservation is visible in the cleanliness and health of its natural environments.
For photographers, West Sikkim is a dream destination the light here, particularly in the early morning when Kangchenjunga catches the first rays of the sun and glows gold against a deep blue sky, is unlike anything else in India.
Top Attractions in our West Sikkim Tour Packages
Pemayangtse Monastery
One of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim, Pemayangtse (meaning "Perfect Sublime Lotus") was founded in the 17th century and is the senior monastery of the Nyingma order in Sikkim. Situated at approximately 2,085 metres on a ridge above Pelling, the monastery commands extraordinary views of the Kangchenjunga range. The main prayer hall is a magnificent three-storey building whose upper floor houses Zangdog Palri an intricately crafted seven-storey wooden model of the heavenly abode of Guru Rinpoche, considered one of the finest examples of traditional Sikkimese religious art. The monastery's annual Chaam (masked dance) festival, held in February, is one of the most dramatic and visually spectacular Buddhist festivals in the Himalayan region.
Kangchenjunga Views from Pelling & Surrounds
The primary reason millions of travellers have discovered Pelling and West Sikkim is the view. On clear mornings particularly in the pre-dawn hour before sunrise Kangchenjunga and its neighbouring peaks (Kabru, Talung, Pandim, Simvo) rise above the horizon in a sequence of silver and gold that is among the most magnificent mountain spectacles on earth. The Pelling Skywalk a glass-bottomed viewing bridge opened in recent years above the forest offers a thrilling platform for these views. The Helipad Ground above Pelling and the grounds of Pemayangtse Monastery are equally excellent viewpoints.
Khecheopalri Lake
Considered the most sacred lake in Sikkim, Khecheopalri Lake (also called the Wishing Lake) is a beautiful, forest-ringed body of water about 26 km from Pelling at 1,700 metres. The lake is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus, and the surrounding forest is so protected that local birds remove any leaf that falls on the lake's surface keeping the water perfectly clear. This is not folklore; visitors frequently witness it. Prayer flags surround the lake, and a small monastery overlooks the water. The atmosphere is one of profound, unhurried peace the kind of sacred natural space that restores something in you that you didn't know had been depleted.
Yuksom
The ancient first capital of Sikkim and one of the most historically significant towns in the northeastern Himalaya, Yuksom sits at 1,780 metres in a forested valley 42 km from Pelling. The town was the site of the first coronation of Sikkim's Chogyal (king) in 1642, performed by three revered lamas who are said to have flown to the site from different directions a mythological foundation story that gives Yuksom its extraordinary spiritual weight. The Norbugang Coronation Throne, the ancient Kathok Lake (a tiny sacred lake in the forest), and the Dubdi Monastery (one of Sikkim's oldest, perched above the town) are among the most significant heritage sites in all of Sikkim. Yuksom is also the trailhead for the Dzongri and Goecha La treks the most celebrated high-altitude trekking routes in Sikkim.
Dzongri & Goecha La Trek
Beginning from Yuksom, the Dzongri Trek (5–7 days) and the full Goecha La Trek (10–12 days) are the premier Himalayan trekking experiences in Sikkim, leading deep into the Khangchendzonga National Park. The route passes through dense temperate forest (alive with rhododendrons in spring), crosses high-altitude ridges above the tree line, and eventually reaches the Dzongri meadow (4,030 m) and the Goecha La pass (4,940 m) from which the face of Kangchenjunga is visible at close range in a spectacle of mountaineering grandeur. This is one of the finest high-altitude treks in India, and West Sikkim is the only starting point. Our West Sikkim packages can be extended to include the Dzongri or Goecha La trek with all equipment, guides, and permits included.
Rabdentse Ruins
Rabdentse, situated about 2 km from Pemayangtse Monastery on a forested ridge, was the second capital of Sikkim (before Gangtok) and was abandoned in 1814. The ruins stone chortens, palace walls, and monastery foundations stand in a peaceful clearing with extraordinary views of the Kangchenjunga range and the Rangit valley below. The short forest walk from the road to the ruins is itself beautiful, and the site has a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that makes it a deeply pleasant stop. It is a UNESCO-listed heritage site within the Khangchendzonga National Park.
Kanchenjunga Waterfall (Rimbi Falls)
Located about 8 km from Pelling, the Kanchenjunga Waterfall also known as Rimbi Falls or the Changey Waterfall is a powerful cascade that plunges from a great height through a forested gorge. The approach involves a pleasant walk through cardamom groves and forest, and the falls themselves are most impressive during and immediately after the monsoon.
Dentam Valley
A beautiful, less-visited valley about 20 km from Pelling, Dentam is an agricultural settlement surrounded by large cardamom plantations, orange orchards, and dense subtropical forest. The valley has a quiet, traditional character with few tourists, excellent birdwatching opportunities, and views of the Singalila Ridge on the India-Nepal border. It's an excellent half-day excursion from Pelling for those who want to experience West Sikkim's agricultural and village life.
Singshore Bridge
The highest suspension bridge in South Asia, the Singshore Bridge near Uttarey in West Sikkim spans a dramatic gorge at approximately 300 metres above the valley floor. The bridge was constructed to connect remote communities on either side of the gorge and offers a thrilling crossing with extraordinary views into the forested canyon below. The drive to Singshore through the cardamom-scented valleys of West Sikkim is beautiful in itself.
Soreng
An emerging tourism destination in the lower valleys of West Sikkim, Soreng is a small, pleasant town known for its orange orchards, cardamom plantations, and access to community-based tourism initiatives. The surrounding countryside is lush and beautiful, with birdwatching opportunities, village walks, and farm visits available. Soreng offers a more authentic, less commercialised taste of West Sikkim's rural culture.
