East Sikkim Tour Packages

East Sikkim is the most accessible and most visited district of this extraordinary Himalayan state, yet it manages to retain a sense of discovery and wonder that few destinations in India can match. Home to Gangtok the vibrant, beautifully situated state capital East Sikkim is the natural entry point for travellers arriving from Siliguri, Bagdogra, or New Jalpaiguri, and it rewards visitors immediately with some of the most spectacular mountain scenery, richest cultural heritage, and warmest human hospitality anywhere in the northeastern Himalaya. Our East Sikkim tour packages are carefully designed to help travelers explore the region's most iconic attractions while enjoying comfortable accommodations, seamless transportation, and memorable sightseeing experiences.

Spread across a landscape of steep forested ridges, cascading rivers, ancient monasteries, rhododendron groves, and high-altitude lakes, East Sikkim is a district of extraordinary contrasts. Within a single day's drive, you can move from the cosmopolitan cafes of MG Marg in Gangtok to the silent, cloud-wrapped shores of Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 metres, watching yaks graze on a high plateau with snow peaks reflected in the frozen water. This juxtaposition of the accessible and the remote, the modern and the ancient, is the defining character of East Sikkim and it is endlessly compelling.

At Vayable Trip, our East Sikkim tour packages are designed to give you a complete and immersive experience of this remarkable district, from its cultural landmarks and adventure hotspots to its natural wonders and spiritual heritage.

Why East Sikkim Deserves a Place on Your Travel Map

East Sikkim's appeal is multi-layered and genuinely diverse. For those drawn to mountains, the district offers staggering views of Kangchenjunga the world's third-highest peak at 8,586 metres visible from numerous points around Gangtok and the surrounding ridges. For cultural travellers, the monasteries, the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the Nepali folk heritage, and the living synthesis of Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali cultures create an endlessly fascinating human landscape. For adventure seekers, the district is the gateway to white-water rafting on the Teesta River, mountain biking on Himalayan roads, and trekking into remote valleys. And for those simply seeking beauty and peace, East Sikkim delivers in abundance clean air, immaculate mountain scenery, excellent food, and the distinctive gentle warmth of Sikkimese hospitality.

East Sikkim is also India's gateway to the Nathula Pass the ancient Silk Route crossing that connects India with Tibet at 4,310 metres one of the most dramatic and historically charged border crossings in Asia, and one of the few places on earth where Indian travellers can stand at the edge of their country's boundary with China.

Top Attractions in East Sikkim Tour Packages

Gangtok

The beating heart of East Sikkim, Gangtok is one of India's most beautiful and best-organised state capitals. Perched on a ridge at 1,650 metres, the city cascades down steep hillsides in a series of terraced neighbourhoods, with MG Marg a beautifully maintained pedestrian plaza at its social and commercial centre. Gangtok is covered in detail in our dedicated Gangtok Tour Packages section, but as the base for most East Sikkim itineraries, it deserves mention here for its monasteries (Enchey, Rumtek), its viewpoints (Tashi Viewpoint, Hanuman Tok), its cable car, and its exceptional dining and café scene.

Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake)

At 3,753 metres above sea level, Tsomgo Lake is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Sikkim a high-altitude glacial lake that sits in a bowl of bare, wind-scoured hills about 40 km from Gangtok on the road to Nathula. The lake is sacred to the local Sikkimese people and is believed to change colour with the seasons deep blue in summer, frozen and snow-bordered in winter, and shimmering gold in autumn when the surrounding vegetation turns. Yaks roam the shoreline, prayer flags flutter in the high-altitude wind, and the sense of elevation and exposure gives the lake a dramatic, almost otherworldly quality. Tsomgo Lake is open to Indian tourists with a permit arranged through their tour operator.

Nathula Pass

One of the most extraordinary border experiences available to Indian travellers, Nathula Pass sits at 4,310 metres on the ancient Silk Route that once connected India with Tibet and China. The pass is open to Indian nationals on selected days (typically Wednesday to Sunday, subject to weather and military clearance), and the journey here from Gangtok passes through some of the most dramatic high-altitude terrain in Sikkim, including the shores of Tsomgo Lake. At the pass itself, Indian Army soldiers stand at the border gate, and on the other side, Chinese border guards are visible at close range. The geopolitical weight of the location, combined with the raw Himalayan beauty of the landscape, makes a Nathula visit deeply memorable. Permits must be arranged in advance, and our packages handle all formalities seamlessly.

Rumtek Monastery

Regarded as one of the most important monasteries in the entire Himalayan Buddhist world, Rumtek Monastery (officially the Dharmachakra Centre) is the seat-in-exile of the Karmapa — the head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Situated on a forested hillside about 23 km from Gangtok, the monastery complex is a masterpiece of traditional Tibetan Buddhist architecture, with a main prayer hall adorned with vivid murals and golden statues, surrounded by living quarters, stupas, and smaller shrine rooms. The monastery houses extraordinary treasures of Tibetan religious art and maintains an active monastic community. The drive to Rumtek through the Ranipool valley and up through terraced fields and forest is beautiful in itself.

Baba Mandir (Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir)

High in the mountains along the road to Nathula, at approximately 4,023 metres, Baba Mandir is a shrine dedicated to the memory of Harbhajan Singh an Indian Army soldier who died in 1968 and is believed, according to local legend and widespread military tradition, to continue to protect the soldiers and people of the region. The shrine is maintained by the Army and visited by thousands of devotees annually, including soldiers from postings across the region. The journey to Baba Mandir passes through spectacular high-altitude landscape and is typically combined with Tsomgo Lake and Nathula in a single long day trip from Gangtok.

Teesta River Rafting

The Teesta River, which flows through the valleys of East Sikkim before joining the Brahmaputra system in the plains, is one of the finest white-water rafting rivers in Northeast India. The stretch from Makha to Sirwani offers thrilling Grade III–IV rapids through gorgeous Himalayan gorges, while gentler stretches are available for beginners. The combination of the river's power and the forested, cliff-walled valley through which it flows makes Teesta rafting an exhilarating and visually spectacular experience. Our East Sikkim packages include rafting as an optional adventure add-on.

Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary

Located between Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass, the Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary is a high-altitude protected area covering remarkable Himalayan biodiversity. The sanctuary harbours rare and endangered species including the red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, and a stunning variety of high-altitude birds including the Himalayan monal pheasant. The landscape of dwarf rhododendrons, alpine meadows, glacial streams, and distant snow peaks is extraordinarily beautiful. Nature walks and birdwatching excursions into the sanctuary can be arranged as part of our East Sikkim packages.

Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, Rumtek

Located near the Rumtek Monastery, this well-maintained botanical garden showcases the extraordinary botanical diversity of Sikkim's eastern Himalayan ecosystems. The garden features over 50 species of orchids (Sikkim is famous for its orchids), alpine flowers, medicinal plants, and Himalayan trees in a beautifully landscaped setting. It's a pleasant half-hour stop and offers excellent photography opportunities.

Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary

A beautiful ridge-top wildlife sanctuary about 23 km from Gangtok, Fambong Lho covers dense temperate and sub-alpine forest that is home to the red panda, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, and an extraordinary variety of birds. The sanctuary offers guided nature walks, birdwatching, and quiet immersion in pristine Himalayan forest. The views of the Kangchenjunga range from the sanctuary's upper ridges are outstanding.

Old Silk Route (Zuluk)

The historic Old Silk Route through the Zuluk area of East Sikkim is one of the state's most dramatic and recently opened tourism corridors. The road climbs through 32 hairpin bends to reach Thambi Viewpoint and the high-altitude plateau near Lungthung and Nathang Valley, with extraordinary views of the Kangchenjunga range and, on clear days, into the Chumbi Valley of Tibet. The journey takes you through a landscape that was a vital trade corridor for centuries and is now an outstanding mountain road experience. Zuluk visits require an Inner Line Permit, which our team arranges as part of all relevant packages.

Best Time to Visit East Sikkim

Spring (March to May): The rhododendrons are in spectacular bloom Sikkim has over 36 species, and the hillsides between March and May are painted in waves of crimson, pink, white, and purple. Temperatures are pleasant at valley level (14°C to 22°C) and cool at altitude. Excellent for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, and monastery visits.

Summer (June): The pre-monsoon period offers clear skies and good visibility before the rains arrive. June is the last reliable month for Nathula visits before the monsoon.

Monsoon (July to September): East Sikkim receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon, and road conditions can be challenging. However, the landscape is a vivid, lush green, waterfalls are at their most powerful, and Gangtok city itself remains fully operational. Nathula and high-altitude sites may be inaccessible in heavy rain.

Autumn (October to November): The finest season for East Sikkim. Crystal-clear skies bring the Kangchenjunga views to their absolute sharpest, all sites are accessible, the temperatures are cool and refreshing (8°C to 18°C), and the combination of post-monsoon freshness and autumn gold in the forests makes the landscape exceptionally beautiful.

Winter (December to February): Cold but clear, with Tsomgo Lake fully frozen and spectacular. Nathula may be snow-covered and occasionally inaccessible. Gangtok itself remains pleasant and operational, and the winter mountain views are outstanding.
