Thekkady Tour Packages

Deep in the highlands of the Western Ghats, at the meeting point of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, lies Thekkady a destination where the air itself is an experience. Standing in a spice garden near Kumily (the gateway town to Thekkady) and breathing in the simultaneous fragrance of cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove is a sensory encounter with the very history of human trade and exploration. These are the spices that drove European powers to circumnavigate the globe, the spices that made Kerala one of the most coveted destinations in the ancient world  and here, in the gardens around Thekkady, they grow in such abundance that they spill over garden walls and perfume the mountain air.

But Thekkady is not only about spices. At its heart is the Periyar Tiger Reserve one of India's finest and most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries, covering 777 sq km of dense tropical forest, shola grassland, and the beautiful Periyar Lake, an artificial reservoir created in 1895 that now forms the centrepiece of the national park. The reserve harbours tigers, leopards, wild elephants, gaur, sambar, sloth bears, Nilgiri tahrs, lion-tailed macaques, and an extraordinary variety of birds and reptiles. The famous boat safari on Periyar Lake watching herds of elephants emerge from the forest to drink and bathe on the lakeshore  is one of the iconic wildlife experiences of South India.

At Vayable Trip, our Thekkady tour packages are designed to give you the complete Thekkady experience wildlife, spices, trekking, culture, and the extraordinary sensory richness of Kerala's highland ecosystem.

Why Thekkady is a Famous Kerala Tourist Destination

Thekkady occupies a unique position in Kerala's travel landscape. It is the state's premier wildlife destination and simultaneously its most important spice-producing region a combination that makes it unlike any other destination in India. The town of Kumily, which serves as the entry point to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, has developed a sophisticated tourism infrastructure while retaining a genuine character rooted in its plantation and wildlife heritage.

The Periyar Tiger Reserve itself is remarkable for its community-based eco-tourism initiatives programmes run in partnership with former poachers who have been trained as wildlife guides and conservation volunteers, creating one of the most authentic and ethically sound wildlife tourism models in India. These guides know the forest with an intimacy that no professional naturalist trained elsewhere could replicate, and their knowledge of animal behaviour, plant life, and forest ecology enriches every excursion immeasurably.

Thekkady is also the gateway to the Idukki Arch Dam one of Asia's largest arch dams and the beautiful Cardamom Hills, a rolling landscape of spice and tea cultivation that forms one of the most distinctive agricultural landscapes in India.

Top Attractions & Experiences in Thekkady Tour Packages

Periyar Boat Safari

The most famous experience at Thekkady, the Periyar Lake boat safari is operated by the Kerala Forest Department and runs multiple times daily. Flat-bottomed motor boats cruise the calm, reed-fringed lake, passing through bays and inlets where the forest comes directly to the water's edge. Wildlife sightings are a matter of season and luck, but elephant herds coming to drink on the lakeshore are a regular occurrence and are one of the most magnificent wildlife spectacles in South India. Other animals frequently seen include sambar deer, otters, cormorants, hornbills, darters, and kingfishers. Even without dramatic wildlife encounters, the lake itself reflecting the forest and the sky, with the Cardamom Hills rising in the distance is extraordinarily beautiful.

The Forest Department offers different tiers of boat safari, ranging from the standard shared boat to exclusive bamboo rafting on smaller channels for a more intimate and wildlife-rich experience. Our packages include all relevant booking and permit arrangements.

Periyar Tiger Reserve – Jungle Walks & Treks

Beyond the boat safari, the Periyar Tiger Reserve offers several outstanding options for those who want a deeper wildlife and forest experience:

Nature Walk: A guided 3-hour morning walk through the park's forest trails with a trained naturalist, following animal tracks and observing wildlife at close quarters. Excellent for birding and small mammal sightings.

Bamboo Rafting: A unique, immersive experience where small groups accompanied by Forest Department guides float silently through the lake's quieter channels on traditional bamboo rafts  the most intimate and wildlife-rich way to experience the lake.

Tiger Trail: An overnight trekking experience into the core forest, led by ex-poacher guides who have been trained through the Eco Development Committee a nationally recognised community conservation initiative. This 2-day programme involves camping in the forest and covers terrain that day visitors never see. It is one of the finest wildlife and conservation experiences available anywhere in India.

Border Hiking: Full-day treks to the park's border areas and the overlooking hills, with excellent views of the lake and reserve from above.

Spice Garden Visits

Thekkady and the surrounding Cardamom Hills are the heart of Kerala's spice country, and a guided visit to a working spice plantation is one of the most memorable and educational experiences the region offers. Walking through a garden where cardamom pods hang from low bushes at eye level, black pepper vines climb towering trees, vanilla orchids trail across bamboo frames, and cinnamon bark is freshly peeled to release its warm fragrance is an encounter with the origins of the spice trade that brought the world's great maritime powers to Kerala's coast.

Our guides explain the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of each spice and the plantation shops sell freshly dried, high-quality spices directly, making this the finest opportunity to buy genuine Kerala spices at source. The difference in quality and fragrance between freshly harvested Thekkady cardamom and the commercially processed product sold in supermarkets is striking.

Elephant Junction (Elephant Interaction Centre)

For those who want a close, responsible encounter with Asian elephants, the Elephant Junction near Kumily offers several carefully managed interaction experiences — elephant bathing, supervised feeding, and short rides — conducted under veterinary oversight and in accordance with ethical wildlife standards. The centre houses rescued and domesticated elephants and provides education about elephant biology, conservation, and the cultural relationship between Kerala's communities and their elephants.

Murikkady Spice & Coffee Plantation

A beautiful, well-maintained working plantation about 5 km from Kumily, Murikkady covers the main spice varieties as well as coffee and cocoa. The plantation tour is guided, comprehensive, and genuinely interesting, covering not just identification of the plants but the history and economics of spice cultivation in the Cardamom Hills. The coffee grown here is of excellent quality and available for purchase.

Kadathanadan Kalari Centre – Kalaripayattu

The ancient Kerala martial art of Kalaripayattu which is believed to be the world's oldest surviving martial art system and a precursor to many Southeast and East Asian martial traditions — is performed in live demonstrations at the Kadathanadan Kalari Centre near Thekkady. The performances showcase extraordinary athleticism, flexibility, and precision, combining mock combat sequences, acrobatics, and the use of traditional weapons. It is genuinely thrilling to watch and offers a fascinating cultural dimension to the Thekkady experience.

Chellarkovil Viewpoint

About 15 km from Kumily, the Chellarkovil viewpoint sits on a ridge overlooking the Tamil Nadu plains far below a dramatic, sweeping view across the lowland forests and settlements that stretches to the horizon. On clear mornings, the distance is extraordinary. The drive through spice country to Chellarkovil is beautiful, and the viewpoint itself is peaceful and uncrowded.

Vandanmedu – Cardamom Auctions

The small town of Vandanmedu, about 30 km from Kumily, hosts one of Asia's largest cardamom trading auctions — a fascinating spectacle of commerce in the world's most aromatic spice. Visiting an auction session (typically in the morning) and observing the rapid-fire bidding for freshly harvested cardamom is an authentic and rarely experienced cultural encounter. Contact our team for auction timing and arrangements.

Mangala Devi Temple

Situated within the Periyar Tiger Reserve at approximately 1,337 metres on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, the ancient Mangala Devi Temple is open to the public only during the Chithirai festival (April–May) a spectacular pilgrimage occasion when thousands of devotees trek through the forest to the temple. The drive and walk to the temple passes through some of the finest forest in the reserve. Our team can arrange special visits during the festival period.

Sabarimala (Seasonal Pilgrimage)

The world-famous Sabarimala temple dedicated to the deity Ayyappa is located in the forests of the Western Ghats accessible via Thekkady and is one of the world's largest pilgrimage destinations. Pilgrims visit during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku season (November to January). Our team can arrange all aspects of a Sabarimala pilgrimage for those who wish to include it as part of a Thekkady itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Thekkady

Winter (October to March): The finest season. Post-monsoon clarity brings the forest to a vivid green, the lake is full and calm, wildlife sightings are at their best (particularly elephants at the lakeside in November and December), and temperatures are perfectly pleasant (15°C to 27°C). Strongly recommended.

Summer (April to June): Warm at valley level but comfortable in the highlands of Thekkady. The dry season concentrates wildlife around the lake, increasing elephant sighting probability. The spice gardens are at their most productive in spring.

Monsoon (June to September): Thekkady receives extremely heavy monsoon rainfall. The forest is at its most dramatically lush and green, and the spice gardens are magnificent in the rain. Some trek options within the reserve are suspended during heavy rain. Best for those who don't mind getting wet in exchange for extraordinary greenery.
