Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheena Vala)
The most iconic image of Fort Kochi and arguably of Kerala itself, the Chinese fishing nets are enormous, elaborate cantilever fishing structures that line the northern tip of the Fort Kochi peninsula. Introduced, according to tradition, by Chinese traders during the reign of Kublai Khan in the 13th–14th century, these nets some of them over 10 metres tall are counterbalanced with large stones and operated by teams of fishermen who lower and raise them in a rhythmic sequence. They are most spectacular at sunset, when the nets and their operators are silhouetted against the golden Arabian Sea sky in one of India's most photographed scenes.
