Kochi or Cochin, as it is still widely known is one of India's most fascinating and most layered cities. Spread across a collection of islands and peninsulas at the meeting point of the Arabian Sea, the Malabar Coast, and the backwaters of Kerala, Kochi is a city that has been shaped by more than two thousand years of trade, conquest, settlement, and cultural exchange. The Chinese, the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British each left their imprint on this extraordinary port city, and the result is a place of architectural and cultural richness unlike any other in South India. Our expertly curated Kochi tour packages will unveil the true soul of the city.
Fort Kochi the old historic quarter on a small peninsula is the heart of this legacy. Walking through its narrow lanes, you pass Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the sunset sky, Portuguese colonial buildings repurposed as art galleries and cafes, a 16th-century Jewish synagogue in a district called Mattancherry (Jew Town), Dutch-era architecture alongside grand British colonial bungalows, and the pervasive scent of spices from the warehouses that have lined these streets for centuries. Fort Kochi is a living museum a place where every building, every alley, and every institution carries history, yet the city is vibrantly, intelligently alive in the present.
Beyond Fort Kochi, the city of Kochi a modern, energetic metropolitan centre offers excellent dining, world-class cultural institutions, some of South India's finest contemporary art, and the kind of cosmopolitan energy that makes it one of Kerala's most enjoyable urban destinations. At Vayable Trip, our Kochi tour packages give you the full depth of this extraordinary city its history, its art, its waterfront, its food, and its unique character as a city where the past and present coexist in perpetual, graceful conversation.
Why Kochi is the Perfect Start (or Finish) to Any Kerala Journey
Kochi serves a practical and experiential role that no other Kerala destination can. As the state's primary airport and commercial hub, it is almost inevitably the arrival and departure point for most Kerala travellers but spending only a transit night here is one of the most common travel mistakes made in Kerala. Kochi deserves 2–3 full days of dedicated exploration, and those who give it that time are consistently rewarded with one of the most satisfying urban travel experiences in India.
The city is also the finest base for day trips and regional exploration the backwaters of Alleppey are just 55 km away, the Munnar hills are 130 km, Thrissur's temple culture is 75 km, and the traditional performing arts village of Cheruthuruthy (Kerala Kalamandalam) is easily accessible. Kochi's excellent hotel infrastructure, airport connectivity, and road links make it the natural hub of any comprehensive Kerala itinerary.
Top Attractions in our Kochi Tour Packages
Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheena Vala)
The most iconic image of Fort Kochi and arguably of Kerala itself, the Chinese fishing nets are enormous, elaborate cantilever fishing structures that line the northern tip of the Fort Kochi peninsula. Introduced, according to tradition, by Chinese traders during the reign of Kublai Khan in the 13th–14th century, these nets some of them over 10 metres tall are counterbalanced with large stones and operated by teams of fishermen who lower and raise them in a rhythmic sequence. They are most spectacular at sunset, when the nets and their operators are silhouetted against the golden Arabian Sea sky in one of India's most photographed scenes. Freshly caught fish from the nets are sold directly at the waterfront, where small stalls fry and serve the catch immediately one of the finest fresh seafood experiences in Kerala.
Fort Kochi Heritage Walk
Fort Kochi's compact, walkable old town is one of the great heritage destinations in India a neighbourhood where almost every building carries historical significance and where the layers of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Jewish, Chinese, and Indian history are literally written in stone. The heritage walk covers:
Vasco da Gama Square: The pleasant waterfront plaza where the famous Chinese nets are concentrated, named after the Portuguese explorer who landed in Kerala in 1498.
St. Francis Church: Built in 1503 and one of the oldest European churches in India. Vasco da Gama was buried here for 14 years before his remains were taken to Portugal, and his grave slab can still be seen inside. The church has passed through Portuguese, Dutch, and British hands, and the changes in its character through the centuries are visible in its architecture and furnishings.
Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica: A magnificent Catholic cathedral first built by the Portuguese in 1505 and rebuilt in its current form in the early 20th century. The interior, with its pastel-coloured walls and Italian Gothic arches, is one of the most beautiful in Kerala.
Dutch Cemetery: Dating from 1724, this well-maintained colonial graveyard houses the tombs of Dutch soldiers, traders, and officials who died in Kochi during the Dutch colonial period. The epitaphs are historical documents in stone.
Bishop's House: A beautifully preserved Portuguese-era colonial building that is now the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Kochi.
Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)
Despite its name, the Mattancherry Palace was actually built by the Portuguese in 1555 and later renovated by the Dutch in 1663. The palace served as a residence and gift to the Cochin rajas, and its most extraordinary feature is the series of Kerala murals covering the walls of its interior rooms vivid, detailed, and magnificently preserved scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas painted in a distinctive Kerala style that is considered some of the finest in the genre. The mural depicting the scene of Shiva's cosmic dance in the Shivite room is particularly celebrated. The palace also houses a fascinating collection of costumes, weapons, and palanquins belonging to the Cochin royal family.
Pardesi Synagogue (Jewish Synagogue, Mattancherry)
The oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations outside of Israel, the Pardesi Synagogue in Mattancherry (Jew Town) was built in 1568 and is one of the most historically significant and architecturally beautiful religious buildings in India. The interior is remarkable hundreds of hand-painted blue and white Chinese floor tiles (no two identical), a magnificent brass banisters, Belgian glass oil lanterns, copper lamps, and a ceiling of green-painted teak. The building reflects the extraordinary cultural synthesis of Kochi's Jewish community, who maintained their faith and traditions in this Indian port city for over 400 years. The surrounding Jew Town area, with its antique shops, spice merchants, and the lingering atmosphere of a once-vibrant community, is equally fascinating.
Kochi Biennale
One of Asia's largest and most prestigious contemporary art events, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is held every two years (in even years, November to March) and transforms Fort Kochi into an open-air, multi-venue contemporary art experience of extraordinary scope and ambition. The Biennale uses Fort Kochi's historic warehouses, public spaces, and heritage buildings as exhibition venues, showing works by leading Indian and international artists in a curatorial context that is both intellectually serious and highly accessible. Even outside Biennale years, the Aspinwall House and other permanent venues maintain excellent contemporary art programming. Kochi has emerged as one of Asia's most significant contemporary art destinations, and the city's art ecosystem galleries, artist studios, creative cafes is vibrant year-round.
Vypeen Island & Cherai Beach
A short ferry ride from Fort Kochi, Vypeen Island is a long, thin strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the backwater channels of Vembanad Lake. The island has a traditional, unhurried character fishing villages, coconut groves, small churches and mosques and its northern tip is home to Cherai Beach, one of the finest beaches near Kochi. Cherai is a clean, relatively uncrowded stretch of sand where the backwater lagoons behind the beach create an extraordinary landscape of water on both sides. Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore. The Cherai beach area has several excellent resorts and makes a perfect overnight add-on to a Kochi itinerary.
Ernakulam Boat Jetties & Waterfront
The mainland city of Ernakulam is connected to Fort Kochi and the surrounding islands by a constant network of government ferries and travelling on these ferries is one of the most pleasurable and affordable experiences Kochi offers. The High Court Jetty and the Fort Kochi Jetty are particularly scenic departure points, and the 15-minute ferry crossing between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi offers wonderful views of the harbour, the Chinese fishing nets, and the commercial port activity. The main boat jetty area in Ernakulam is also a lively, characterful zone of street food, flower markets, and daily commercial life.
Kerala Folklore Museum
One of the finest heritage museums in Kerala, the Folklore Museum in Thevara (south Kochi) houses an extraordinary collection of Kerala's traditional art, architecture, religious objects, bronze sculptures, terracotta figurines, tribal artefacts, and ritual objects. The building itself is constructed entirely from reclaimed traditional Kerala materials carved wooden pillars, laterite walls, antique doors — and is a work of art in its own right. An outstanding and undervisited museum that gives essential context to all of Kerala's cultural experiences.
Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura
Located in the eastern suburbs of Kochi, Hill Palace is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala, housed in the former royal palace of the Kochi royal family (Cochin Royal Family). The palace complex comprises 49 buildings set in beautifully landscaped grounds, housing the royal family's collection of paintings, sculptures, jewellery, and historical artefacts. The palace grounds, with their large deer park and heritage garden, are a pleasant afternoon destination.

Best Time to Visit Kochi
Winter (October to March): The finest season. Dry, clear weather (25°C to 32°C), excellent conditions for fort walks and waterfront activities, and the peak season for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (even years, November–March). Strongly recommended.
Summer (April to June): Hot and humid (30°C to 36°C), but Kochi's waterfront breeze makes it manageable. The famous Thrissur Pooram elephant festival (April–May) is accessible as a day trip during this season.
Monsoon (June to September): Kerala's monsoon is dramatic, and while Kochi's urban infrastructure handles it well, outdoor sightseeing (particularly Fort Kochi's open-air heritage walk) is best avoided during heavy rain. The Onam festival (August–September) is Kerala's greatest cultural celebration and adds a festive dimension to any Kochi visit.
