Port Blair is where the Andaman Islands begin and what a beginning it is. The capital and largest settlement of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair sits on the southwestern coast of South Andaman Island, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Bay of Bengal. It is a city of striking contradictions: an administrative capital that feels like a tropical village, a place of deep and dark colonial history that opens its arms to tourists seeking paradise, a bustling port town where fishing boats and luxury ferries share the same harbour, and a gateway that promises and delivers some of the most beautiful islands, beaches, coral reefs, and marine ecosystems on earth.
Port Blair's own character is genuinely worth exploring before moving on to the outer islands. The Cellular Jail known as Kala Pani, the Black Water is one of the most important and most haunting heritage sites in India, a place where the British imprisoned India's freedom fighters in conditions of extraordinary cruelty, and where the stories of those imprisoned resonate with a power that any Indian visitor feels deeply and personally. The Ross Island ruins the ghost of what was once the British administrative headquarters, now consumed by the roots of ancient trees are among the most evocative heritage sites in the entire Bay of Bengal. And the marine ecosystem around Port Blair the North Bay coral reefs, the Jolly Buoy island reefs, the mangrove creeks of the Andaman coast provides some of the finest snorkelling and scuba diving in India.
At Vayable Trip, our Port Blair tour packages give you the complete experience of this extraordinary island capital its history, its natural beauty, its role as the essential base for exploring the wider Andaman archipelago, and the unique atmosphere of a city on the edge of the last great tropical island wilderness in the Indian Ocean.
Why Port Blair Deserves More Than a Transit Stop
Most travellers to the Andamans treat Port Blair as a one-night transit arriving by flight, spending a single evening, and departing the next morning for Havelock or Neil Island. This is a common error. Port Blair has two to three full days' worth of genuinely exceptional experiences that deserve proper time: the Cellular Jail and its extraordinary Sound and Light show, the Ross Island ruins, the Corbyn's Cove beach, the North Bay coral reef excursions, and the rich marine ecosystem of the surrounding waters. Travellers who give Port Blair its due time return with a far fuller understanding of and appreciation for the Andaman Islands as a whole their history, their ecology, and their extraordinary significance in the Indian story.
Top Attractions in our Port Blair Holiday Packages
Cellular Jail (Kala Pani)
The most significant and most emotionally powerful heritage site in the Andaman Islands, the Cellular Jail was built by the British between 1896 and 1906 to house political prisoners — Indian freedom fighters, revolutionary nationalists, and ordinary citizens convicted of opposing British rule. The jail named for its cellular design, in which each prisoner was kept in permanent solitary confinement in a separate cell without any contact with other prisoners housed some of the greatest names of India's independence movement, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (Veer Savarkar). The conditions here were deliberately extreme: hard labour, starvation rations, brutal corporal punishment, and the knowledge that the ocean surrounding the islands hence "Kala Pani," the Black Water made escape essentially impossible.
Today, the Cellular Jail is a National Memorial, carefully preserved, with a museum that documents both the structure's history and the individual stories of its prisoners. Three of the original seven wings survive (four were demolished after independence), and walking through the long, silent corridors of cells each barely large enough to stand in is a deeply moving experience. The Sound and Light show performed every evening in the jail's central courtyard, narrating the history of the jail and the independence movement with recorded voices, lights, and music, is one of the finest of its kind in India and should not be missed under any circumstances.
Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island)
Barely a kilometre from Port Blair's Aberdeen Jetty by ferry, Ross Island was the administrative headquarters of the British Andaman administration from 1858 to 1941 a small island that the British developed into a miniature version of metropolitan colonial life, complete with a church, a ballroom, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a bakery, a printing press, and the residences of the Chief Commissioner and other senior officials. When the Japanese occupied the Andamans in 1942, the British evacuated rapidly and Ross Island was effectively abandoned, never to be permanently reoccupied.
Today, the ruins of the colonial buildings are being slowly consumed by the roots of enormous fig and banyan trees, whose aerial roots have worked through walls, lifted floors, and split entire buildings over eight decades of undisturbed growth. The effect is extraordinary a colonial ghost world being reclaimed by the forest in a process of organic archaeology that is one of the most visually compelling sights in the Andamans. Spotted deer wander freely through the ruins, peacocks call from the collapsed belfry of the old church, and the silence is complete except for birdsong and the distant sound of the sea. The ruins include the Chief Commissioner's residence, the church, the swimming pool, the barracks, and the water treatment plant each in a different state of tree-invasion, each with its own particular quality of haunted beauty.
North Bay Island & Coral Safari
North Bay Island, visible from the Port Blair waterfront, is the closest coral reef to the city and the most easily accessible snorkelling and glass-bottom boat experience in the Andamans. The reef here is a genuine tropical coral ecosystem technicolour fish, sea turtles, moray eels, rays, and over 100 species of coral and the glass-bottom boat ride provides an excellent introduction to reef ecology for those who prefer to observe from above the water. For snorkellers and divers, the North Bay reef provides a taste of the extraordinary underwater world that defines the Andaman experience. Our packages include North Bay excursions with all equipment.
Corbyn's Cove Beach
Port Blair's own beach a palm-fringed crescent of golden sand backed by forest, about 8 km from the city centre is a pleasant and accessible beach for those who want sea access without making the journey to the outer islands. The water at Corbyn's Cove is calm and clear, the setting is attractive, and the beach has a relaxed, local character that is different from the more tourist-oriented beaches of Havelock and Neil. Sunset from Corbyn's Cove is particularly fine.
Chidiyatapu (Bird Island)
At the southernmost tip of South Andaman Island, approximately 28 km from Port Blair, Chidiyatapu (literally "Bird Island" in Hindi) is a nature reserve covering dense tropical forest rich in Andaman-endemic birds. The mangrove-fringed coastline, the coral-rich tidal pools, and the outstanding sunset views across the Andaman Sea make Chidiyatapu one of the finest half-day excursions from Port Blair. The birding here Andaman serpent eagle, Andaman drongo, Andaman woodpecker, and numerous other endemic species is excellent for naturalist travellers.
Wandoor & Jolly Buoy Island (Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park)
The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor, approximately 29 km from Port Blair, encompasses 281 sq km of protected marine ecosystem including 15 islands and their surrounding coral reefs. The Jolly Buoy Island within the park accessible by boat from Wandoor is one of the finest snorkelling destinations in the South Andaman region, with pristine coral gardens and extraordinary marine life including clown fish, parrot fish, angel fish, and sea turtles. Jolly Buoy is open on alternate days (and Red Skin Island on the alternating days) to protect the reef from over-visitation. Our packages coordinate carefully with the opening schedule.
Samudrika Naval Museum
Operated by the Indian Navy, the Samudrika Naval Museum in Port Blair provides an excellent introduction to the Andaman Islands' natural history, marine ecosystem, tribal heritage, and naval significance. The museum's exhibits cover the coral reef ecosystem, the endemic wildlife of the islands, the history of the Andaman tribes (including the Sentinelese, the Jarawa, and the Onge), and the naval history of the islands. The marine biology section, with its preserved specimens of deep-sea creatures and coral ecosystems, is particularly impressive.
Aberdeen Bazaar & Port Blair Town
Port Blair's main commercial area Aberdeen Bazaar is a lively, character-filled market area where local Andamanese, mainland Indian settlers, Bengali fishermen, Tamil workers, and tourists mingle in a compact space full of seafood restaurants, local shops, ferry booking offices, and the distinctive energy of a port town at the edge of the tropics. Walking through Aberdeen Bazaar in the early evening, sampling fresh-grilled seafood at the roadside stalls, and absorbing the unique multicultural character of Port Blair is an authentic and enjoyable urban experience.
Scuba Diving in Port Blair
The waters around Port Blair offer several excellent scuba diving sites for both beginners and experienced divers. The Wall (a drop-off near North Bay), the Aquarium (a shallow site near Carbyn's Cove), and the Mac Point site near the harbour are all accessible from Port Blair and provide encounters with reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, and extraordinary coral formations. Best Time to Visit Port Blair
Winter (November to February): The finest season. The northeast monsoon has passed, the sea is calm, visibility for snorkelling and diving is at its peak (15–30 metres in many sites), and the weather is beautifully pleasant (23°C to 30°C). All island ferries and boat excursions operate normally. Strongly recommended.
Summer (March to May): Still good conditions, particularly for diving. The sea remains relatively calm until the southwest monsoon arrives in late May. Temperatures rise to 32–34°C but the ocean breeze keeps it manageable.
Monsoon (June to September): The southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall and rough seas. Ferry services to the outer islands are frequently disrupted or cancelled. Diving and snorkelling are limited. Most visitors avoid this period, but budget travellers find the reduced prices and the dramatic monsoon atmosphere appealing.
October: A transitional month between the end of the southwest monsoon and the beginning of the northeast monsoon. Seas are unsettled and ferry services can be erratic. Late October usually sees improved conditions.
