8. Angling and Fly Fishing

The crystal-clear rivers of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly the Tenga, Kameng, and Subansiri rivers are renowned for Mahseer and Golden Mahseer fishing. Arunachal Pradesh is one of the few places in India where sport fishing is legally permitted with proper licences, and anglers from across the world travel here for the chance to land trophy Mahseer in breathtaking mountain settings.

This place has been regarded as the land of cliffs and monasteries. The place is situated near Indo-China. Furthermore, it is also well-known for the Tawang Monastery. This abbey is the biggest in the country but the second-largest globally. When it comes to the terrains, it consists of alpine fields, snow-capped ridges, offering every traveller a hushed retreat.

Best Time to Visit Arunachal Pradesh

The best time to visit Arunachal Pradesh is from October to April, when the weather is relatively dry and pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C in lower areas, though higher altitudes like Tawang can get much colder with occasional snowfall.

October to March (Peak Season): Ideal for most tourists. Clear skies, minimal rainfall, and stunning views of the Himalayas. Perfect for visiting Tawang, Sela Pass, Ziro Valley, and cultural festivals. Winters (December-February) bring magical snow-covered landscapes in higher regions.

March to June (Summer): Pleasant in the hills with blooming rhododendrons and orchids. Great for trekking and wildlife spotting, though some higher passes may still have snow.

July to September (Monsoon): Heavy rainfall makes roads slippery and increases landslide risks. However, the landscapes turn incredibly lush, and it's a good time for budget travelers seeking fewer crowds.

Cuisines of Arunachal Pradesh- A Foodie's Adventure

No Arunachal Pradesh tour is complete without exploring its extraordinary culinary traditions. The state's cuisine varies significantly by tribe but generally features ingredients like bamboo shoots, millet, dried fish, pork, and wild herbs unavailable elsewhere. Must-try dishes include Lukter (dried beef with chilli), Thukpa (Tibetan-style noodle soup popular in Tawang), Apong (millet beer, the social lubricant of Arunachal's tribal communities), Pika Pila (bamboo shoot and dried fish curry), and Marua Jaanr (millet fermented drink). Food in Arunachal is honest, hearty, and deeply tied to the land.

Here are the dishes and drinks you absolutely must try on your Arunachal Pradesh tour:

1. Thukpa:   A warming Tibetan-style noodle soup with vegetables, meat (usually pork or beef), and aromatic broth. Ubiquitous in Tawang and the Monpa belt, Thukpa is the perfect antidote to high-altitude cold.

2. Pika Pila: A distinctive Arunachali dish of fermented bamboo shoot cooked with dried pork fat and chilli. The bamboo shoot is the hero ingredient of Arunachal's cuisine, pungent, flavourful, and found in some form at nearly every tribal meal.

3. Lukter: Dried beef or pork strips seasoned with salt and chilli, either sun-dried or smoked. A protein-rich staple among the Adi and Galo tribes, often eaten with rice or rice beer. It has an intensely savoury, jerky-like flavour.

4. Bamboo Shoot Rice: Sticky rice cooked inside a bamboo tube over an open fire, a traditional Adi cooking technique that imparts a subtle, woody sweetness to the rice. Often served at festivals and community gatherings.

5. Apong (Rice Beer): The social lubricant of Arunachal Pradesh. This mildly fermented millet or rice beer is brewed in almost every tribal home and offered to guests as a mark of respect and hospitality. Slightly tangy, low in alcohol, and utterly refreshing.

6. Marua Jaanr: A fermented millet drink closer to a thin porridge than a beer, served warm in a bamboo vessel. Common in the higher-altitude Monpa regions, it is especially popular during the Losar and Torgya festivals in Tawang.

7. Smoked Fish Curry:  Fresh river fish (often from the Siang, Kameng, or Subansiri) smoked over wood and then cooked in a thin curry with ginger, chilli, and bamboo shoot. A staple across most tribal communities.

8. Momos (Tibetan Dumplings): Steamed or fried dumplings stuffed with pork, beef, or vegetables, eaten with a fiery red chilli dipping sauce. Found across Tawang and the Monpa region, these are an absolute must-have when you visit the higher-altitude areas.

Shopping Experience in Arunachal Pradesh

When it comes to shopping, the state stands out as a hub of unique items. Different regions will offer sightseers with different things, which are unique, colourful and made with care and dedication. Below mentioned are some of the things which you, as a visitor, can purchase:

  • Monpa cloth bags

How to Reach Arunachal Pradesh?

When you have decided to visit this Northeastern state, it is important to plan properly. Before heading out, it is important to keep in mind that this is a restricted Indian state. You must obtain the ILP (Inner Line Permit) to proceed further. Here are some of the ways to get to this location:

By Air

The air connectivity of this state has greatly enhanced over time. However, it still has limited options when compared with other Indian states. The Donyi Polo Airport accepts flights from many cities across the country. This includes cities like Bhubaneswar, New Delhi and Kolkata.

Apart from that, Guwahati Airport is the easiest option available. The airport stands out as a major hub for those heading towards the state's western or central region. After that, sightseers can travel via road (12 to 14 hours towards Tawang).  Other airports include Lilabari Airport and Dibrugarh Airport.

By Train

The state doesn’t have a proper rail network. However, there are some border towns that do provide a good rail network. The Naharlagun Railway Station is well-connected with countless cities. The station stands out as the closest railhead for Ziro and the central region of the state. Tinsukia Railway Station is ideal for visiting the eastern region of the state.

It is also connected to some of the major metropolises in the state of Assam, along with the northeast. Harmuti Station is a convenient option for sightseers travelling to the central and western zones. From here, you can travel to Seppa and other areas via road.

By Road

Since the state is bordered by Assam in the west and south, it makes it a gateway state. Sightseers can enter the state via Assam through the following entry points:

  • Hollongi Gate
  • Banderdewa Gate
  • Dirak Gate
  • Sela Pass
  • Likabali Gate
  • Koyu Gate

Permits Required for Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is a protected state requiring special permits for entry:

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for all Indian citizens. Easily obtained online at arunachalpermit.nic.in or through Vayable Trip on your behalf.
  •  Protected Area Permit (PAP): Required for all foreign nationals. Must be applied through a registered tour operator — Vayable Trip is fully authorised to arrange this.
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Required for visits to Bumla Pass and certain border areas. Vayable Trip arranges this as part of Tawang packages.
  • Processing time: ILP can be obtained within 24 hours online. PAP takes 4–6 weeks. Vayable Trip strongly recommends all travellers apply for permits at least 6 weeks before their travel date.
