From Ooty, the route heads south through Coimbatore toward the Palani hills, where Kodaikanal has a noticeably different character calmer, greener, and centred around Kodai Lake in a way that gives the town an almost lakeside-resort feel rather than Ooty's more spread-out hill-town layout.

Kodaikanal gets two full days in this itinerary, covering Kodai Lake with its cycling and boating options, Coaker's Walk for the valley views, Bryant Park, and Pillar Rocks three enormous rock formations that are one of the more striking natural sights in the Palani range. We also route in Guna Caves and, depending on the season and everyone's energy levels, a short visit to Dolphin's Nose (Kodaikanal has one too, distinct from Coonoor's) for one of the more dramatic valley drops in the region.

The transit day between the two hill stations is the part most self-planned trips get wrong the drive from Ooty to Kodaikanal isn't short, and trying to sightsee on that day usually means arriving exhausted.
