Bangalore sits in an unusually privileged position among Indian cities: within a radius of five hours, it has the Western Ghats, the Nilgiris, the heritage of Mysore, the coffee country of Coorg, and the Arabian Sea coast. For Bangaloreans looking to escape the city, and for visitors using Bangalore as a gateway, the Mysore-Ooty circuit is the classic move for good reason.
The distances work out neatly. Mysore is 150 km south of Bangalore, a smooth three-hour drive on the expressway that passes through flat Deccan countryside. You arrive in a city that operates at a different speed entirely, organized, green, heritage-heavy, and famously clean by Indian city standards. Then from Mysore, the road dips further south and west, crossing into Nagarhole forests before emerging into Tamil Nadu and climbing the Nilgiris toward Ooty. It's a journey of gradients, literal ones as the road gains four thousand feet in altitude and of atmosphere.

Mysore was the seat of the Wadiyar dynasty for several centuries, and it still carries that architectural legacy: the palace, the palaces within the palace grounds, the statue-lined Chamaraja Circle, the architecture along the university road. It's a city where you can feel history physically, in the proportions of the streets and the scale of the public buildings. The food is excellent, Mysore dosa is a thing in itself, and the Mysore pak from Guru Sweet Mart deserves its reputation.

Then there's the forest drive, an unofficial but entirely real attraction of this route. The stretch through Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Mudumalai is one of the best wildlife corridors in peninsular India. The road is closed to traffic at night, but morning drives through this section often yield elephant herds, spotted deer, peacocks, and if you're very fortunate, something rarer.

Ooty arrives through hairpin bends, the air cooling degree by degree as you climb. It's a hill station with a genuinely cinematic quality, the tea gardens, the colonial architecture, and the mist that appears every afternoon like clockwork. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO Heritage train, is the single best thing to do in Ooty if timing permits.
Six days gives this route its proper pace, enough to sit somewhere and do nothing for an afternoon, which is ultimately what good travel is for.
