The Konkan coast is one of those stretches of India that people from the rest of the country somehow don't talk about enough, and for those who've been, that's almost a relief. Stretching roughly 720 kilometres along Maharashtra's western edge between the Arabian Sea and the Sahyadri mountains, the Konkan region is a world unto itself. Dense cashew and mango orchards, red-tiled Konkani houses half-hidden in coconut groves, ancient Portuguese and Maratha forts standing right at the edge of the sea, and beaches so clean and quiet you'd be forgiven for thinking they were only for you.

This 5-day Konkan tour package from Mumbai takes you down the coast, covering some of its most beautiful and varied destinations. You'll start with the laidback beach vibes of Alibaug, just a ferry or short drive from Mumbai, and then work your way south through Harihareshwar, Velas (famous for its Olive Ridley turtle nesting), Tarka, the undisputed champion of clear blue water and snorkelling in Maharashtra, and then up towards the coastal town of Malvan with its imposing Sindhudurg Fort sitting right in the middle of the sea.
The food along this route is reason enough to make the trip. Malvani cuisine, fiery fish curries, sol kadhi, kombdi wade, fresh prawns straight from the boats, is a revelation if you haven't had it before. Every small dhaba on the highway cooks better than most restaurants in the city, and the solkadhi (the pink, creamy kokum and coconut milk drink) is the only logical antidote to the sun.

This is fundamentally a road trip, and the drive itself is gorgeous. The coastal highway hugs cliffs, dips into river estuaries, and passes through tiny villages where life moves at a pace that feels almost unreal when you've just come from Mumbai. Come here between October and February for the best weather, the sea is calm, the skies are clear, and everything feels exactly as it should.

Whether you're travelling as a couple, with family, or with a group of friends, the Konkan coast rewards every kind of traveller. It's not a flashy, Instagram-polished destination; it's real, raw, and quietly magnificent.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Mumbai to Alibaug

Arrival Day
Ferry Across & Fort Exploration Head out from Mumbai early morning, you can either take the ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa (a lovely 50-minute ride that starts the coastal vibe immediately) or drive via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Pen. Alibaug is your base for the first night. Check into your hotel, freshen up, and spend the afternoon at Alibaug Beach or nearby Kashid Beach. Kolaba Fort, which sits in the sea and is accessible on foot during low tide, is worth a visit in the late afternoon. The fort has solid Maratha history and great views back to the shore. Dinner at a local seafood restaurant. The sol kadhi here is already better than anywhere in the city.

Day 2 - Alibaug to Harihareshwar

Temples, Cliffs & a Quiet Beach Town After breakfast, check out and drive south along the coastal road towards Harihareshwar, roughly 3.5 hours depending on your stops. This is one of the prettiest drives on the route; the road winds through fishing villages and past small creeks. Harihareshwar is a small pilgrimage town, the Harihareshwar Temple dedicated to Shiva sits dramatically on a cliff above the sea. Spend the evening walking along Harihareshwar Beach and Srivardhan Beach. Overnight stay here, the sound of the waves from your hotel window is genuinely hard to leave.

Day 3 - Drive to Tarkarli

The Blue Lagoon of Maharashtra Today's drive takes you through Ratnagiri district and down to Tarkarli, roughly 4 hours. Tarkarli is famous for something very specific: its water. The Karli River meets the Arabian Sea here, and the result is some of the clearest, most turquoise water you'll find anywhere on the Indian coast. After checking in, head straight to the beach. The snorkelling here is genuinely excellent, visibility can be 5 to 8 metres, and you can hire equipment locally. A sunset boat ride on the backwaters is a must. Dinner at a beach shack with fresh pomfret and rice.

Day 4 - Malvan & Sindhudurg Fort

An Island Fort & Authentic Malvani Food Spend the morning back on the Tarkarli beach or doing one more round of snorkelling, then check out and drive to nearby Malvan (about 20 minutes). Sindhudurg Fort is the highlight. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had this fort built on a small island in 1664, and it's remarkable both architecturally and historically. A boat takes you across. After the fort, have lunch at one of Malvan's fish restaurants (this is the origin of Malvani cuisine, don't miss kombdi wade or surmai fry). Afternoon: leisure time or visit the Rockgarden beach. Return to Tarkarli for the night.

Day 5 - Departure Back to Mumbai

Last Morning by the Sea & Drive Home Wake up early, take one final walk along the beach, and have a proper Malvani breakfast before checking out. The drive back to Mumbai is around 5.5 to 6 hours, so start by 9 AM for a comfortable arrival. You can stop at Ratnagiri town on the way if time permits, the Thibaw Palace and Jaigad Fort are both worth a quick detour. Arrive back in Mumbai by evening, carrying the smell of the sea and a strong craving for sol kadhi.
