Shangarh: Offbeat Himachal Trek to Lush Meadows & Temple Trails

Shangarh is approximately 130–150 km from Manali via the Aut–Banjar route. The drive takes around 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on road conditions. It is not on the direct Manali highway, so most travellers combine Shangarh with the Sainj Valley/Banjar area rather than making it a day trip from Manali.

Shangarh can be visited in winter, but road conditions can become challenging after heavy snowfall. The village itself remains accessible in most winters, and the snow-covered meadow is stunning. However, accommodation options are limited in peak winter and temperatures drop well below freezing at night. Check road conditions before travelling.

For walks within Shangarh village and to the meadow, no permit is required. However, to trek into the GHNP buffer zone, including the Shilt Hut trail and beyond, you need a permit from the Range Officer's office in Shangarh. For the GHNP core zone (Rolla onwards), a licensed guide is also mandatory.

The meadow is at its most spectacular in autumn (September to mid-November), when the skies are crystal clear, the deodar trees turn golden, and the temperature is pleasant for trekking. Spring (March–May) is also beautiful when wildflowers bloom across the clearing. Summer visits offer lush greenery but occasional monsoon clouds.
