Sacred Monasteries in Spiti: A Complete Buddhist Circuit Guide

Some of the most famous monasteries in Spiti include Key Monastery, Tabo Monastery, Dhankar Monastery, Komic Monastery, and Kungri Monastery. Each monastery has unique architecture, history, and spiritual significance.

The best time to explore Spiti’s monasteries is from May to September when roads are accessible and the weather is pleasant. Winters (November to March) are extremely cold, and many routes remain closed due to heavy snowfall.

Ideally, 5 to 7 days are enough to cover the major monasteries in Spiti Valley, including stops at Kaza, which serves as a base for monastery visits.

Indian tourists do not need a permit to visit Spiti Valley. However, foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit to visit certain areas near the Indo-Tibetan border.

Most monasteries remain open year-round, but access depends on road conditions. During winter, reaching places like Dhankar Monastery can be challenging.
