The History of Naggar Castle: Five Centuries of Power and Legacy

Origins: The Seat of the Kullu Kingdom

The history of Naggar Castle is inseparable from the history of the Kullu Kingdom itself. Kullu the "Valley of Gods" has been inhabited since antiquity, its dense forests and river valleys sheltering hundreds of ancient temples, sacred groves, and tribal communities. The Kullu Kingdom emerged as a distinct political entity sometime in the 2nd century AD, though it rose to prominence much later.

Naggar served as the capital of the Kullu Kingdom from approximately the 15th century until around 1660 AD, when Raja Jagat Singh shifted the royal seat to Sultanpur. During those two-plus centuries, Naggar was the political, cultural, and spiritual heart of the Kullu Valley. The castle was the administrative headquarters of the rajas, the venue for royal durbars, and the symbolic centre of Kullu's identity.

Construction and Founding

Naggar Castle is traditionally attributed to Raja Sidh Singh of the Kullu royal dynasty, constructed in the early 16th century though some historical sources place the original structure even earlier. What makes the castle extraordinary from an architectural standpoint is its construction method: the Kath-Kuni style, which alternates horizontal layers of deodar cedar timber with stone masonry in a technique that provides exceptional earthquake resistance a vital quality in the seismically active western Himalayas.

The castle complex grew organically over successive reigns, with each raja adding chambers, courtyards, temples, and galleries according to the needs and aesthetics of his time. The result is an architectural palimpsest a layered structure that reflects five centuries of continuous habitation and adaptation.

The British Colonial Period

When the British extended their influence into the Kullu Valley in the 19th century, Naggar Castle was taken over by the colonial administration and briefly used as a Circuit House an official government rest house for touring British officers. This period brought some modifications to the castle's interior, including the introduction of European-style furniture and fittings that can still be glimpsed in certain rooms today. Paradoxically, British occupation also helped preserve the structure from more radical alteration during the transition from royal to administrative use.

Nicholas Roerich and the Castle's Cultural Renaissance

The most fascinating chapter in Naggar Castle's modern history begins in 1928, when the Russian artist, philosopher, and explorer Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) established his permanent home in Naggar after years of travelling across Central Asia, Tibet, and the Himalayas. Roerich was one of the most celebrated artists of the early 20th century a polymath whose paintings, writings, and peace activism earned him multiple Nobel Prize nominations.

Though Roerich and his family lived in a separate estate (now the Nicholas Roerich Museum) a short walk from the castle, his presence transformed Naggar into an international cultural and intellectual destination. Scholars, artists, scientists, and explorers made the journey to this remote Himalayan village to meet Roerich, and his legacy permanently elevated Naggar's status from a forgotten former capital to a celebrated heritage site.

Himachal Pradesh Tourism Heritage Hotel

In the decades following Indian independence, Naggar Castle passed into the custody of the Himachal Pradesh government, which undertook sensitive restoration and conversion of the castle into one of the most atmospheric heritage hotels in the Himalayan region. Today, managed by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC), the castle operates as a fully functional heritage hotel while simultaneously serving as a public museum, allowing day visitors to explore its ancient rooms, courtyards, and galleries.

Architecture of Naggar Castle: The Wonder of Kath-Kuni

The Kath-Kuni Building Tradition

Naggar Castle is one of the finest and most accessible examples of the Kath-Kuni architectural tradition in Himachal Pradesh. Kath-Kuni (also spelled Kathkuni or Kath Kuni) is a vernacular building system developed over millennia in the mountainous regions of the western Himalayas. The name derives from the Pahari words for wood (kath) and corner (kuni), reflecting its defining structural feature: interlocking wooden corner joints that hold the entire structure together without metal fasteners.

The technique alternates courses of large dressed stone with horizontal logs of deodar cedar (a local Himalayan timber prized for its durability, resistance to rot, and pleasant fragrance). The wooden layers act as natural shock absorbers during earthquakes, allowing the structure to flex rather than crack. Many Kath-Kuni buildings in the Kullu Valley have survived earthquakes that destroyed later masonry structures a testament to the ancient wisdom embedded in this construction system.

Nicholas Roerich Museum, Naggar: Art Meets the Himalayas

Who Was Nicholas Roerich?

Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich (1874–1947) was a Russian artist of extraordinary versatility and depth. Trained at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and later under the legendary painter Arkhip Kuindzhi, Roerich created over 7,000 paintings during his lifetime a body of work that spans stage set designs for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, mystical Himalayan landscapes, portraits of Tibetan monasteries, and monumental canvases depicting Vedic and Buddhist mythology.

Beyond painting, Roerich was a philosopher, archaeologist, peace activist, and explorer. His Central Asian Expedition (1924–1928) traversed over 25 countries and accumulated vast scientific and cultural data. He founded the Roerich Pact an international treaty for the protection of cultural property during armed conflict which became a precursor to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. He received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations and is considered one of the most remarkable polymath figures of the 20th century.

The Roerich Estate and Museum in Naggar

Nicholas Roerich settled in Naggar in 1928 with his wife Helena and sons George and Svetoslav (himself a celebrated painter). He lived and worked here until his death in 1947. The family estate a traditional Pahari house set amidst apple orchards above the Beas Valley is now the Nicholas Roerich Museum, administered by the International Roerich Memorial Trust.

The museum contains an irreplaceable collection of original Roerich paintings in situ displayed in the very rooms where they were created. Seeing these vivid, luminous Himalayan landscapes in the actual Himalayan valley that inspired them is a genuinely moving experience. The collection includes:

Original oil paintings of Kullu Valley, Lahaul, and the high Himalayas.
Paintings of Tibetan monasteries, Central Asian landscapes, and mythological subjects.
Personal artefacts, books, correspondence, and furniture belonging to the Roerich family.
Works by Svetoslav Roerich, an accomplished painter in his own right.
A memorial hall with biographical exhibits tracing Roerich's life and legacy.

The Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute

Roerich also established the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute in Naggar in 1928, a pioneering scientific organisation dedicated to botanical, archaeological, and ethnographic research across the Himalayan region. The institute collaborated with leading institutions in Europe and America and made significant contributions to Himalayan natural history before being dissolved during World War II.

Naggar as an Artists' Village

Roerich's legacy has made Naggar a magnet for artists, writers, and creative souls across India and internationally. The village has a distinctive bohemian character you will find small art galleries, craft studios, and the atmospheric Roerich Art Festival (held annually in Naggar) that draws artists from across the subcontinent. Staying in Naggar even for a single night, you will understand why Roerich chose this particular valley as his final home.

Temples of Naggar: Sacred Stones Alongside Ancient Walls

Naggar is not only a heritage and arts destination it is also one of the Kullu Valley's most significant temple clusters. The village and its immediate surroundings contain several ancient temples that complement a visit to the castle perfectly.

Tripura Sundari Temple

Perched above the castle on the hillside, the Tripura Sundari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Tripura Sundari a form of Devi revered across the Kullu Valley. The temple is built in the classic Pahari pagoda style with a tiered wooden roof and elaborately carved wooden facade. The views from the temple's hilltop location are spectacular and justify the 15-minute uphill walk from the castle alone. The deity is considered the guardian of Naggar and receives special reverence during the Naggar festival season.

Gauri Shankar Temple

Located within or immediately adjacent to the castle complex, the Gauri Shankar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Built in the Shikara style distinct from the Kath-Kuni castle itself the temple features carved stone panels depicting Shiva in various manifestations. It is one of the oldest continuously worshipped shrines in Naggar and remains an active place of daily worship.

Murlidhar Temple (Krishna Temple)

The Murlidhar Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna as the divine flute player (Murlidhar), is another important Vaishnava shrine in Naggar village. The temple is notable for its carved wooden interior and the annual Murlidhar festival that draws pilgrims from across the Kullu Valley.

Naggar Temple Fair

The annual Naggar Fair (typically held in May–June) is one of the most vibrant local festivals in the Kullu Valley. Dozens of village deities (devtas) from the surrounding area are brought in their ornate palanquins (raths) to pay tribute to the presiding deity of Naggar. The fair features traditional Kullu music, Natti dance performances, local handicraft stalls, and a wonderful insight into the living folk traditions of Himachal Pradesh.

Heritage Naggar Castle

Best Time to Visit Naggar Castle

March – May: Spring Bloom

Spring is one of Naggar's most beautiful seasons. Rhododendrons blaze crimson on the surrounding hillsides, apple trees burst into white blossom, and the air carries a freshness after the winter chill. Temperatures are pleasantly mild (10°C–22°C), crowds are manageable, and the mountain views are generally clear. This is an excellent time for trekking and photography.

June – July: Early Summer and Monsoon Onset

June is busy with domestic tourists escaping the plains heat. The Naggar Fair typically falls in this period. Monsoon arrives in early July, bringing misty, atmospheric days when the valley is wreathed in cloud and the forest drips with rain. The castle takes on a brooding, romantic character in the monsoon particularly appealing to photographers and writers. Occasional landslides on the approach roads can cause delays; check road conditions before travelling.

August – September: Post-Monsoon Clarity

As the monsoon withdraws, the valley emerges washed and luminous. September is arguably Naggar's finest month crystal-clear mountain air, green valleys, snow-fresh peaks, and the beginning of apple harvest season. The Roerich Art Festival in October brings a creative energy to the village that is entirely distinctive.

October – November: Autumn Gold

The apple orchards turn golden and amber, the forests blaze with autumnal colour, and the Himalayan light takes on a warm, low-angled quality that makes every view look like a painting. Temperatures drop sharply in November; carry heavy woolens.

December – February: Winter Quiet

Naggar is relatively accessible in winter (unlike Rohtang or Spiti) as it sits at a moderate altitude of 1,768 metres. Light snowfall occasionally dusts the castle and village in a white coat, creating magical scenes. The castle and museum remain open, though the heritage hotel has fewer guests. If you enjoy quiet, contemplative travel in a snow-touched Himalayan village, winter Naggar is a hidden gem.
