Mathura Tour Packages

Mathura is one of India's most ancient and most sacred cities a city where the divine and the earthly have been intertwined for over three thousand years, and where the air itself seems charged with the devotional energy of countless generations of Krishna devotees. Situated on the western bank of the Yamuna River approximately 50 km north of Agra and 150 km south of Delhi, Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna the most beloved and most widely worshipped deity in the Hindu tradition and is therefore one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations on earth for the hundreds of millions of Hindus who hold Krishna at the centre of their devotional lives.

The city's spiritual history is staggeringly deep. Mathura is mentioned in ancient Vedic texts, in the Mahabharata, and in numerous Puranas as one of the most sacred tirthas (pilgrimage fords) on the Yamuna. The Buddha is said to have visited Mathura. The Jain tirthankara Neminatha was born here. The great philosopher Patanjali taught here. And most profoundly, Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in the Mathura of 5,000 years ago, to parents imprisoned by his maternal uncle, the tyrant Kansa a birth that launched one of the great mythological narratives of the world.

Mathura today is a vibrant, spiritually intense city of temples, ghats, pilgrims, and the extraordinary cultural energy that comes from being so intimately associated with the life of the most celebrated divine personality in the Indian tradition. It is also inseparable from the nearby town of Vrindavan where Krishna spent his childhood and youth together forming one of the most significant pilgrimage circuits in Hinduism: the Braj Bhoomi, the sacred land of Krishna.

At Vayable Trip, our Mathura tour packages give you the complete experience of this extraordinary city its ancient temples, its sacred ghats, its spiritual culture, and its extraordinary festivals with all the expertise and care that such a significant destination deserves.

Why Mathura is a famous Tourist Destination?

To understand India its art, its music, its literature, its philosophy, its devotional traditions, and the sensibility that underlies all of these you need to understand Krishna. And to understand Krishna, you need to come to Mathura. The Bhagavata Purana, the Bhagavad Gita, the poetry of Mirabai, the music of Tansen, the paintings of the Braj school, the architecture of Rajasthan's temples, the traditions of Kathak dance, the festivals of Holi and Janmashtami all of these flow, in one way or another, from the story of Krishna and from the sacred geography of the Braj Bhoomi centred on Mathura.

Visiting Mathura is not merely a religious act it is a cultural and civilisational encounter with the deepest roots of the Indian imagination. Even for travellers who are not Hindu, the intensity of devotional energy, the antiquity of the sites, the beauty of the ghats on the Yamuna, and the extraordinary human pageant of pilgrimage make Mathura one of the most compelling and rewarding destinations in India.

Top Attractions in our Mathura Tour Packages

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple

The most sacred site in Mathura and one of the most important in the entire Hindu world, the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex marks the exact location where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born specifically, the prison cell where his parents Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by Kansa. The complex comprises the ancient Kesava Deo Temple (rebuilt multiple times after successive demolitions) and the more recently constructed Garbha Griha shrine a simple, deeply charged room where the sense of the divine birth is almost tangibly present. The main temple area is large, beautifully maintained, and always thronging with devotees from across India and the world. Our guides provide full historical and mythological context, bringing the story of Krishna's birth vividly alive.

Shahi Eidgah Mosque & Its Significance

Adjacent to the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, the Shahi Eidgah Mosque was constructed in 1660 by Aurangzeb as was his practice on the site of a previously destroyed Keshava Deo Temple. The juxtaposition of these two sacred sites on the same ground is one of the most historically complex and emotionally charged locations in India, and understanding this history is essential to understanding both the complexity of Mathura and the broader narrative of India's historical experience.

Dwarkadhish Temple

One of Mathura's most magnificent temples and one of the most architecturally impressive in the entire Braj region, the Dwarkadhish Temple was built in 1814 and is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his form as the king of Dwarka. The temple's elaborate facade of pink sandstone with its intricate carved pillars, the beautiful murals within the prayer hall, the grand scale of the architecture, and the atmosphere of continuous devotional activity make it one of Mathura's most rewarding temple experiences. The evening aarti here is magnificent priests adorned the deity with elaborate ceremony as hundreds of devotees crowd the courtyard below.

Vishram Ghat

The most sacred of Mathura's ghats and the traditional starting point of the Mathura pilgrimage, Vishram Ghat (the "Resting Ghat") is where Lord Krishna is believed to have rested after slaying Kansa. The ghat is always busy with bathers performing ritual purification in the Yamuna, priests conducting ancestral rites, flower sellers adorning the steps with marigold garlands, and boats offering river rides. The evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat performed with lamps, flowers, and devotional music is one of the most beautiful and spiritually charged of the ghat aartis along the Mathura-Vrindavan Yamuna stretch. A boat ride from Vishram Ghat at dawn, watching the sun rise over the river with the temple spires reflected in the water, is one of Mathura's finest experiences.

Mathura Museum (Government Museum)

One of the finest archaeological museums in India, the Mathura Museum (officially the Government Museum, Mathura) houses an extraordinary collection of Mathura School sculpture one of the two great schools of ancient Indian Buddhist and Hindu sculpture that flourished between the 2nd century BCE and the 12th century CE. The Mathura School's red sandstone carvings more naturalistic and sensuous than the Gandhara School's Hellenistic-influenced work include remarkable Bodhisattva figures, yaksha images, Jain tirthankara sculptures, and early images of the Hindu deities. The museum's collection is of international art historical significance and is essential context for understanding the visual traditions of ancient India.

Kans Qila (Kansa's Fort)

The ruins of Kansa's Fort the citadel of the tyrant king Kansa, Krishna's maternal uncle stand on the bank of the Yamuna at the northern end of Mathura's ghat area. The present structure is largely from the 16th century Mughal period (later converted to a ghat bathing area), but the site's mythological association with the story of Kansa Krishna's birth, Kansa's attempts to kill the infant Krishna, and Krishna's eventual return to Mathura to slay Kansa gives it a powerful narrative significance.

Gita Mandir

A beautiful modern temple complex constructed by the Birla family and dedicated to the Bhagavad Gita, the Gita Mandir features the complete text of the Gita inscribed on its walls in Sanskrit  an extraordinary devotional and literary monument. The temple complex is peaceful and beautifully maintained, with gardens and secondary shrines to Ram and Lakshman, and is an excellent complement to the more ancient temples of the Mathura circuit.

Potara Kund

A sacred tank associated with the childhood of Krishna specifically, the washing of Krishna's clothes (potara means "to wash" in Braj Bhasha) Potara Kund is one of Mathura's quieter and more contemplative sites. The tank is ancient, the surrounding temples are richly carved, and the atmosphere is one of the more peaceful in busy Mathura.

Mathura's Ghats – A Complete Circuit

Mathura has 25 ghats in total along the Yamuna, each with its own mythological association and religious function. Beyond the Vishram Ghat, the Swami Ghat (associated with the Ramakrishna Mission), the Chakratirth Ghat (where Krishna's Sudarshana Chakra is said to have rested), and the Kali Ghat each have their own character and stories. A boat ride along the entire Mathura ghat circuit at dawn gliding past the stepped embankments, the temples, the bathing pilgrims, and the morning mist on the Yamuna is one of the finest ways to experience the full extent of Mathura's sacred waterfront.

Mathura's Festivals – The Greatest Celebrations of Krishna

Mathura's festival calendar is among the richest and most exuberant in India, reflecting the joyful, celebratory nature of Krishna devotion:

Janmashtami (August): The birthday of Lord Krishna celebrated with extraordinary intensity in Mathura, the place of his birth. The midnight celebration at the Dwarkadhish Temple and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, when the exact moment of Krishna's birth (at midnight) is marked with a great outpouring of devotion, is one of the most powerful religious events in India. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge on Mathura for Janmashtami. Advance booking is absolutely essential.

Holi: While Holi is celebrated across India, the Braj Bhoomi version celebrated over 40 days in Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, and Nandgaon is the most famous and most spectacular in the world. The Lathmar Holi at Barsana (where women playfully beat men with staves, re-enacting a Krishna-Radha legend) and the flower Holi at Vrindavan's Banke Bihari Temple are internationally famous events that draw visitors from across the world.

Radhashtami: The birthday of Radha Krishna's divine consort is celebrated at Barsana (her birthplace, near Mathura) with great ceremony.
