If there's one hill station in India that still feels completely untouched by the chaos of modern life, it's Matheran. Perched at around 800 metres above sea level in the Sahyadri range, this tiny hill town has earned a very unique distinction, it's the only eco-sensitive hill station in Asia where motor vehicles are entirely banned. No cars, no bikes, no honking. Just you, the sound of birdsong, and the cool mountain breeze.

Matheran sits about 90 km from Mumbai and roughly 120 km from Pune, making it one of the most accessible weekend escapes for people living in either city. You can drive up to Dasturi Naka, leave your car there, and then either walk in, hire a hand-pulled rickshaw, or hop on the iconic toy train that crawls through thick jungle and bridges to deliver you right into town.

The town itself is small enough to explore on foot in a day, but that's exactly the charm. There are dozens of viewpoints, Charlotte Lake, Panorama Point, One Tree Hill, Louisa Point, Echo Point, each giving you a different face of the same breathtaking valley. Some of the views, especially at sunrise or just after the monsoon, look like they've been painted. The red mud paths that wind through the forests are perfect for a quiet evening walk, and the chestnuts and local sweet shops lining the main market make for a surprisingly fun little stroll.
This Matheran tour package is designed for those who genuinely want to slow down. Whether you're a couple looking for a quiet romantic retreat, a family wanting something close to home, or a solo traveller who just needs to breathe, Matheran delivers in a way very few places can. We've put together 3 days that let you soak in the best of what Matheran has to offer without rushing through any of it.

The best time to visit Matheran is between October and May. During the monsoon, the town transforms into a lush green wonderland, though some paths get slippery and the toy train runs on limited schedules. Summers are cooler than the plains, and winters (November to February) are absolutely crisp and lovely.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival & First Walk Through Town

Arrival Day
Start your morning from Mumbai or Pune and head towards Neral. From Neral, board the famous Matheran toy train, this narrow-gauge heritage railway has been running since 1907 and the ride itself is half the experience. The train zigzags through dense forest, over little bridges, and through tunnels before arriving at Matheran station. Once you check into your hotel, freshen up and head out for a slow walk through the market. In the evening, make your way to Panorama Point or Louisa Point for a stunning sunset, dinner at your hotel or at one of the cosy local restaurants. Tonight, sleep to the sound of absolute silence.

Day 2 - Viewpoints & Nature Walk

Charlotte Lake, Echo Point & More Trails Rise early and catch the sunrise from One Tree Hill, if you're a morning person, this will be the highlight of your trip. After breakfast, head to Charlotte Lake, which is serene and peaceful in the early hours. Then walk or take a horse to Echo Point, Heart Point, and Alexander Point. The paths between these points are well-shaded and lined with tall trees, it's genuinely lovely to just wander. After lunch, take a rest or explore the local bazaar. In the evening, head to Monkey Point (also called Sunset Point) to watch the sun drop behind the Sahyadri hills. Dinner and an early night to prepare for tomorrow.

Day 3 - Departure with One Last Morning

Morning Stroll & Check-Out Your last morning in Matheran deserves to be spent quietly, maybe a walk through the red-mud paths one final time, picking up some local chikki and masala chai from the market. Check out of the hotel by late morning. Take the toy train back to Neral or walk down to Dasturi Naka, where your vehicle awaits. Drive back to Mumbai or Pune with your heart genuinely a little lighter than when you came.
