Ask anyone in Mumbai where they go when they need to breathe, and nine times out of ten, the answer is Lonavala. It's only about 85 kilometres from Mumbai, sits right on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and takes barely 90 minutes to reach, yet the moment you arrive, the city feels like a completely different world. The air is cooler, the hills are green, the waterfalls are thundering during the monsoon, and the whole vibe just slows down.

Lonavala, along with its twin town Khandala, occupies a ridge in the Western Ghats at about 622 metres elevation. The landscape around here is genuinely stunning, with layered plateaus, deep valleys, ancient caves, and waterfalls that seem to come out of nowhere. In the monsoon (July–September), Bhushi Dam overflows and turns into a natural water park, Tiger's Leap becomes one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the whole of Maharashtra, and every hillside seems to sprout a new waterfall overnight. In winter and summer, the waterfalls are quieter but the trekking, fort exploration, and general countryside vibes more than compensate.

The food scene in Lonavala is anchored firmly in one item: chikki. This brittle peanut or cashew candy has been made here for generations, and the main market is lined with shops selling every variety imaginable. Beyond chikki, the town has excellent options for Maharashtrian thalis, corn bhel (a local monsoon speciality), and surprisingly good cafes that have opened up over the past decade.

For history buffs, the caves at Karla and Bhaja, Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BCE, are within easy reach and among the finest ancient monuments in the Western Ghats. Lohagad Fort, a Maratha stronghold that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recaptured from the Mughals, offers both history and a satisfying trek to some brilliant valley views. And the Rajmachi Fort trek, for those who want something a bit more serious, is one of the best weekend treks from Mumbai.
This Lonavala package from Mumbai is built for a comfortable, unhurried 3 days, enough to hit the key sights, do a bit of walking, eat well, and come back genuinely refreshed.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Mumbai to Lonavala: Arrival & Evening by the Valley

Arrival Day
Drive Up & First Glimpse of the Ghats Leave Mumbai in the morning and take the expressway towards Pune. The drive itself is lovely, as you climb the Khandala Ghat, the city gives way to forest and rock faces. Check into your hotel by noon. After lunch, head to Bhushi Dam (especially wonderful if it's the monsoon season, the overflowing dam steps are something else). Then drive to Tiger's Leap for the late afternoon, this viewpoint juts out over a valley so dramatic it looks almost unreal. Stop for bhutta (roasted corn) on the way back and spend the evening in the market buying chikki. Dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant.

Day 2 - Forts, Caves & Waterfalls

Lohagad Fort Trek & Karla Caves Start early with a light breakfast and drive to Lohagad Fort. The trek up takes about 40–50 minutes on a well-defined path and rewards you with views of the Sahyadri ridgelines and the Pawna Valley. It's not a tough trek, even relatively unfit travellers manage it comfortably. Back down for a late morning rest, then drive to the Karla Caves in the afternoon. These 2,000-year-old Buddhist caves are one of the finest examples of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture and are worth spending an hour in. On the way back, stop at Ryewood Park or Valvan Dam if you want a peaceful evening walk. Good Maharashtrian dinner tonight

Day 3 - Morning Walk, Chikki Shopping & Departure

Lion's Point, Last Walk & Drive Back Head to Lion's Point in the morning, one of Lonavala's most scenic viewpoints and best experienced in the quiet of early morning before tour groups arrive. After breakfast, do a final walk through the market, load up on chikki and fudge, and check out of the hotel. You can also stop at Kune Falls if they're flowing well on your drive out. Start the return journey to Mumbai by 11 AM for a comfortable afternoon arrival. The drive back gives you one last look at those beautiful Ghat passes.
