The town sits at around 2,760 metres above sea level in the Kinnaur district, directly across from the Kinner Kailash range, a massif that includes a 79-foot natural Shivling considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. On a clear morning, standing on the road above Kalpa and looking at those snow-covered peaks catching the first light of the day, you understand immediately why this entire range is considered divine.

But Kalpa is more than its views. It's an old, living Kinnauri village, the kind where wooden houses with intricately carved balconies stand next to apple orchards and prayer flags. The village of Roghi, reachable on a pleasant walk or short drive from Kalpa, sits even higher and offers an even more dramatic panorama.
