There is a particular kind of silence that settles over Hampi in the late afternoon, when the sun turns the boulders the colour of warm honey, and the only sound is the temple bells drifting across the Tungabhadra. This was once the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, one of the richest cities in the world in its time, and what remains today is a landscape unlike anywhere else in India, broken temple spires rising out of impossible granite boulders, banana plantations growing in the shadow of forgotten palaces, and stepwells so precisely cut they still hold water centuries later.

This Hampi Tour Package is built for travellers who want to actually absorb Hampi rather than rush through a checklist. We have spaced the sightseeing so that the heavy, crowd-pulling monuments, Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple complex with its stone chariot, the Lotus Mahal, are covered in the cooler hours of the morning, leaving afternoons free for slower exploration and the evenings reserved for sunset, which in Hampi is something of a local sport. A coracle ride on the Tungabhadra is built into the itinerary, as is a visit to Anegundi, the quieter village across the river that many visitors skip and almost always regret skipping.

Accommodation is arranged in comfortable heritage-style or resort properties near Hampi Bazaar or along the river, depending on availability, and a local guide who knows the difference between the stories told in guidebooks and the stories the stones actually tell will accompany you through the major sites. Hampi rewards travellers who are willing to climb a boulder or two for a better view, and this itinerary leaves room for exactly that. Best visited between October and February when the heat is forgiving, though even a hot Hampi afternoon has its own strange beauty once the boulders start to glow.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival & First Look at Hampi Bazaar

Arrival Day
Arrive at Hampi and check in to your hotel by early afternoon. After a short break, head out on foot through Hampi Bazaar, the long colonnaded street that once functioned as a market for traders dealing in precious stones, the pillars still standing on either side give a sense of just how grand this stretch once was. Walk through to Virupaksha Temple, the only temple in Hampi that has remained in continuous worship since the city's founding, and spend some time watching the daily rituals unfold around its towering gopuram. As the light starts to soften, climb up to Hemakuta Hill just behind the temple. It is a short, easy climb scattered with small pre-Vijayanagara shrines, and it happens to be the best free sunset point in Hampi, with the whole bazaar and the Virupaksha tower laid out below you. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 2 - The Royal & Sacred Centres of Hampi

After an early breakfast, set off for the Vittala Temple complex, home to the iconic stone chariot and the famous musical pillars that produce different musical notes when tapped, a feat of engineering still studied today. From here, continue to the Royal Enclosure area to see the Lotus Mahal, an elegant two-storey pavilion built for the royal women, and the Elephant Stables next door, with its row of domed chambers that once housed the king's ceremonial elephants. After lunch and some rest through the hottest part of the day, head down to the Tungabhadra riverbank for a coracle ride, the round, woven boats that have been used here for generations. It is a slow, peaceful way to see the riverside temples and ghats from the water. Round off the evening with sunset at Matanga Hill or Hippie Island across the river, both offering sweeping views over the boulder fields.

Day 3 - Anegundi Village & Departure

On your final morning, cross the river to Anegundi, considered older than Hampi itself and far less visited. Walk through its quiet lanes, visit the Pampa Sarovar lake and, if time and energy allow, climb the few hundred steps up Anjanadri Hill, believed by many to be the birthplace of Hanuman, for one last panoramic view of the region. Return to Hampi for breakfast or brunch, check out of your hotel, and depart with your driver for your onward journey, carrying back more boulders' worth of stories than photographs could ever capture.
