North Karnataka holds three of India's most important heritage sites within a couple of hours' drive of each other, and yet most travellers only ever see one of them. This Hampi Badami Tour Package, designed for travellers starting out from Pune, links Badami's astonishing rock-cut cave temples, the UNESCO-listed temple cluster at Pattadakal, the experimental early temples of Aihole, and finally the sprawling ruins of Hampi into one unhurried four-day circuit essentially tracing the architectural evolution of South Indian temple building from its earliest experiments to its grandest expression.

The journey from Pune typically begins with an overnight train or an early flight into Hubli, from where the road trip through the red-soil countryside of North Karnataka begins. Badami's caves, carved directly into a sandstone cliff overlooking the Agastya lake, are unlike anything most first-time visitors expect from cave temples the carving here is delicate and the views from the cliff edge alone are worth the detour. Pattadakal and Aihole, a short drive away, are quieter still, and walking through them with a guide who can point out where each architectural style was first attempted makes the whole circuit click into place before you ever set foot in Hampi.

By the time you reach Hampi on the second evening, the scale of the Vijayanagara empire feels less like a surprise and more like an inevitable conclusion to everything you have just seen. A full day is dedicated to Hampi's major sites Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala complex, the Lotus Mahal along with a coracle ride on the Tungabhadra. Accommodation is arranged in comfortable properties in both Badami and Hampi, with private vehicle transfers throughout and a guide who genuinely enjoys this stretch of history. Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Pune to Badami

Arrival Day
Depart Pune by overnight train or an early morning flight to Hubli, followed by a scenic road transfer to Badami (approximately 3 to 4 hours by road, depending on connection). Check in to your hotel and rest through the afternoon heat. In the evening, walk over to the Badami cave temples, carved into the cliff face above Agastya Lake. There are four caves in total, each dedicated to different deities and built in different centuries, and the climb between them offers some of the best views in North Karnataka, especially as the lake catches the last of the daylight.

Day 2 - Pattadakal, Aihole & Drive to Hampi

After breakfast, drive out to Pattadakal, where a cluster of temples built by Chalukya queens sits quietly along the Malaprabha river, this is where North and South Indian temple architecture styles were tried side by side, sometimes literally in the same temple. From here, continue to Aihole, often called the cradle of Indian temple architecture, where over a hundred experimental temples dating back over 1,500 years are scattered through a small village. After lunch, begin the longer drive towards Hampi (around 4 to 5 hours), arriving in the evening. Check in to your hotel and spend a relaxed evening, perhaps walking through Hampi Bazaar as the temple lights come on.

Day 3 - Full Day Hampi Sightseeing

Spend the day exploring Hampi's major sites with your guide, Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars, the Royal Enclosure, Lotus Mahal and the Elephant Stables. Break for lunch and rest during the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, take a coracle ride on the Tungabhadra River before heading up to Matanga Hill or Hemakuta Hill for sunset over the boulder-strewn landscape.

Day 4 - Anegundi & Departure to Pune

Spend the morning in Anegundi village across the river, visiting Pampa Sarovar and, if you're up for a climb, Anjanadri Hill. Return for a late breakfast, check out, and transfer back to Hubli for your onward train or flight to Pune.
