For Chennai travellers used to Ooty and Kodaikanal, Chikmagalur arrives as a pleasant surprise fewer crowds, real working coffee estates instead of manicured gardens, and a highest peak in Karnataka that you can summit on a half-day trek rather than a full expedition. This four-day package builds in a comfortable overnight travel leg from Chennai, either by overnight train via Bangalore or a flight into Bangalore followed by a scenic road drive, so that you land in Chikmagalur with a full three days to actually use, rather than burning your first day on transit.

The itinerary leans into what Chikmagalur does better than almost anywhere else in South India: plantation life. Mornings are spent walking estate trails learning how coffee actually gets from a red cherry to the cup in front of you, afternoons head out to the district's natural highlights Hebbe Falls reached by jeep and a short forest trek, the cave shrine at Baba Budangiri, and the sweeping viewpoints around Kemmangundi, a former colonial summer retreat at over 1,400 metres. The Mullayanagiri sunset trek is the centrepiece of the trip, timed so you reach the summit just as the light turns the whole Western Ghats range gold.

Stay is arranged at a coffee estate homestay or resort for the full duration, which means your meals through the trip are largely home-cooked, plantation-fresh, and a welcome change of pace from a typical hotel breakfast buffet. A private vehicle handles both the Chennai-side road transfers and the local sightseeing, with a guide for the estate walks and the more remote treks. Best done October through February, when the post-monsoon waterfalls are still flowing and the hill air carries an edge of genuine cold in the mornings, which Chennai rarely offers.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Chennai to Chikmagalur

Arrival Day
Depart Chennai by overnight train to Bangalore, or take an early flight, followed by a scenic road transfer of around 4 to 5 hours to Chikmagalur through the Western Ghats foothills. Arrive by evening, check in to your estate stay, and spend the evening settling in with a cup of estate-grown filter coffee while the hills cool down around you.

Day 2 - Coffee Estate Walk & Hebbe Falls

Start the day with a guided walk through the plantation, learning the difference between Arabica and Robusta and seeing how pepper and orange trees share the land with the coffee bushes. After breakfast, take a jeep ride through the estate trails to Hebbe Falls, finishing on foot through the forest to reach the two-tiered waterfall. Return for lunch and rest, then spend the late afternoon at Hirekolale Lake, a calm spot with the Mullayanagiri range visible in the distance, ideal for an easy sunset walk.

Day 3 - Mullayanagiri Trek & Baba Budangiri

Head out towards Baba Budangiri in the morning, visiting the hillside cave shrine considered the birthplace of Indian coffee cultivation, with views across the valley on the drive up. In the afternoon, drive towards Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, and take the short trek up to the summit temple. Time this for late afternoon so the descent coincides with sunset spreading across the Western Ghats one of the better viewpoints in South India for a trek of this little effort.

Day 4 - Kemmangundi & Departure to Chennai

On your last morning, drive out to Kemmangundi, a former British summer retreat perched at over 1,400 metres, with terraced gardens and viewpoints like Raj Bhavan Point and Hebbe View Point offering some of the best panoramas in the district. Return to your estate stay for a late breakfast, check out, and begin the road transfer back to Bangalore for your onward train or flight to Chennai.
