Chikmagalur smells like coffee before you even see it the drive in winds through estate after estate of Arabica plants growing under the shade of silver oak trees, with the Baba Budangiri range rising blue-grey in the distance. This is the birthplace of coffee in India, by local legend brought here by a saint named Baba Budan who is said to have smuggled seven coffee beans out of Yemen centuries ago, and the entire district still runs on that early decision in ways both literal and atmospheric.

This Chikmagalur Tour Package is built around the district's two real strengths: its plantations and its peaks. We start with the gentler, scenic side of Chikmagalur, estate walks, waterfall visits, and the kind of slow afternoons that coffee country is made for before building up to Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, for a sunrise or sunset trek that rewards a short, manageable climb with views across the entire Western Ghats. Hebbe Falls, reachable only by a jeep ride through the estates followed by a short trek, is included as one of the more memorable detours, along with Baba Budangiri's cave shrine, sacred to both Hindu and Muslim pilgrims.

Accommodation is arranged in a homestay or resort set within or near an active coffee estate, which tends to be the difference between visiting Chikmagalur and actually experiencing it waking up to the smell of roasting beans and the sound of estate workers starting their day is part of the package, not an afterthought. A private vehicle and local guide handle the more remote stretches, particularly the jeep trail to Hebbe Falls and the Mullayanagiri ascent, which can be rough in places. Best visited just after the monsoon, from October through February, when the waterfalls are full and the peaks are clear.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival & Coffee Estate Trails

Arrival Day
Arrive in Chikmagalur by late morning and check in to your estate stay or homestay. After lunch, take a guided walk through the coffee plantation, learning how Arabica and Robusta beans are grown, dried and processed, and how pepper vines and orange trees are interplanted between the coffee rows for shade and income. In the late afternoon, drive out to Hirekolale Lake, a quiet spot popular for sunset views with the Mullayanagiri range as a backdrop. Return to your stay for a home-style dinner featuring estate-grown coffee, naturally.

Day 2 - Hebbe Falls & Mullayanagiri Peak

Start early with a jeep ride through the Z-Point estate trails towards Hebbe Falls, the last stretch is on foot through forest, and the falls themselves drop in two stages through dense greenery, usually at their most dramatic in the months right after monsoon. After lunch back at the estate, head towards Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at just under 1,930 metres. The drive takes you most of the way up, with a short, well-marked trek to the summit, where a small Shiva temple sits at the top. Time the climb for late afternoon to catch the sunset spreading gold and pink across the surrounding ranges before heading back down.

Day 3 - Baba Budangiri & Departure

On your final morning, visit Baba Budangiri, a cave shrine on a forested hillside venerated by both Hindu and Muslim communities and considered the spot where coffee was first introduced to India. The drive up offers some of the best valley views in the district. Return to your estate stay for a late breakfast and check out, departing with enough roasted coffee beans in your bag to make the journey home smell better than usual.
