If there's one experience that sums up Kerala better than anything else, it's a night on an Alleppey houseboat, and this three-day package is built entirely around making that experience unhurried. Alleppey, often called the Venice of the East, is a network of lagoons, canals, and rivers that wind through paddy fields and coconut groves, and the traditional kettuvallam a converted rice barge with a thatched roof and a private sit-out deck remains the best way to actually be inside that landscape rather than just looking at it from the shore.

This package is deliberately short and focused. It's designed for travellers who want a proper backwater experience without needing to build it into a longer, multi-city Kerala trip a weekend escape from Kochi, a quiet couple of days for a honeymoon, or a peaceful family break. Two nights on the water give you enough time to properly settle into the rhythm of backwater life: mornings spent watching fishermen cast their nets, afternoons cruising past narrow village canals where children wave from the banks, and evenings anchored in a quiet stretch of water with nothing but birdsong and the occasional temple bell in the distance.

Meals are cooked fresh on board by your private crew think steamed rice, coconut-based fish curry, and banana chips, all served on a plantain leaf as the boat gently rocks. Along the way, there's time for a village walk through a nearby settlement, a short canoe ride through the narrower canals that the larger houseboats can't reach, and, if you'd like, an optional stop in Kumarakom, known for its bird sanctuary and slightly quieter backwater stretch.

The Alleppey houseboat tour package is Vayable Trip's answer to travellers who've heard about Kerala's backwaters and simply want to experience them properly, without cramming in five other destinations. We handle the houseboat booking, transfers, and onboard meal planning, so all that's left for you to do is pick a spot on the deck and watch the palms drift by.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Alleppey & Houseboat Check-in

Arrival Day
Arrive in Alleppey, either directly or via a transfer from Kochi (about two hours away), and head straight to the houseboat jetty. Your private kettuvallam will be waiting, fully staffed with a captain, a cook, and a helper for the duration of your stay. The boat sets off by early afternoon, drifting through the wider lakes first before turning into narrower village canals as the day goes on. Lunch is served fresh on board usually a Kerala-style thali with fish curry, rice, and seasonal vegetables. As evening approaches, the boat anchors for the night in a quiet, scenic stretch of water, and dinner is served on the open deck under the stars.

Day 2 - Village Walk, Canoe Ride & Kumarakom (Optional)

After breakfast on board, step off the houseboat for a short walk through a nearby backwater village this is a good chance to see how daily life actually functions here, from coir-making to toddy-tapping to small canal-side shops. Later in the morning, a local canoe will take you through the narrower canals that the larger houseboat can't navigate, offering a quieter, closer look at the backwaters. If your itinerary includes the Kumarakom extension, the afternoon can be spent cruising towards this slightly calmer stretch of backwater, known for its bird sanctuary and mangrove-lined banks, before returning to the houseboat for a second night on the water.

Day 3 - Morning Cruise & Departure

Spend the final morning cruising back towards the main jetty, taking in the last stretch of paddy fields and palm groves before breakfast is served on deck. Check out of the houseboat by late morning and transfer onward, whether that's back to Kochi for a flight home or the next leg of a longer Kerala trip, carrying with you what most guests describe as the most memorable part of their entire Kerala holiday.
